You can verify if the coolant sensor is good, using the EEC readout. Sort of an early version of on board diagnostics. It's not very easy, but here's a guide to doing it if you want to try.

Yup. All bets are off when you're dealing with a carb that might have been neglected for the past 40 years. Hell, even one that's been driving fine one day can suddenly have problems.

Does the choke work?

No choke - EFI.
If you don't have vacuum to the the TK, is there a constant source of vacuum on the far side of the TK solenoid?

In that case it's really time to get the service manual set because it'll have all the trouble shooting procedures and values you'll need to test for and all that in it.

I didn't know they were already fuel injected at that point.

So if I did swap to I take and carb what be a good combo? I was thinking like a cheap ebay lowrise performer intake and maybe a 600 holly carb or Rochester carb? Or is 600 to big for a stock 302?

In my opinion you can make a 600 Holley work, but you’d probably be happier with something smaller, like the 465. I’m only talking Holley because I know those best, there are probably lots of other choices. Just make sure whatever you go with has vacuum secondaries (a 4160 model).
