1966 Jack Mounting Hardware

Post by 455hota »

In the trunk of my 1966 Continental, I found all the following parts for the spare tire jack assembly:

I believe these are all the original pieces to the jack assembly.

I also have the original spare tire and jack instruction label:

I believe i am missing the “clip” or “clips” that secure these parts to the inner passenger side of the rear quarter panel.

Can someone shar a pic or two showing me what i nwwd to find / aquire? Thanks.

PS i have the original trunk side board with the flap that covers the jack once it is mounted, and the original spare tire cover with the flap door.

This is one picture I have. The backboard is grey fiberboard, then there's a vinyl cover that drapes over it.

Dan your pic says it all!! Thanks!!

After looking at your pic, i thought now i need to find some brackets…but then i remembered emptying the glove box of all the weird stuff that finds its way into old car glove boxes over the years. I put all that junk into a zip lock bag and marked it with a big ???
Something in that bag made me find it and open it up, and guess what i found? Both the bracket, and the clip and the special flat heat attaching screws!!

Here is my passenger side cardboard trim piece with the vinyl cover flap.

Here is the upper jack bracket laid in its spot on thw cardboard trim piece.

Here is the clip in its spot.

Here is the whole setup mocked up on the ground.
I believe from your pic Dan the spring goes from the jack bracket to the upper hole toward the rear of the quarter panel (two yellow circles). Then the spring is pulled tight over the jack and handle as in the jack storage decal, and hooked over the clip (red circle). Pretty simple now that i understand how it works!
Final question, what was mounted in the hole i circled in yellow with the question mark? That hole exists it the metal substructure like all the other holes.

Here is how my jack is (incorrectly) mounted showing the spring attachment.

I’ve determined that my jack spring orientation and other things are likely not correct. I can’t replicate what’s in The picture.

For the record, the pictures I posted are all from convertibles, not sedans or coupes.

Also, the exterior sheet metal on my car has all been replaced from donor cars. Those two supports for the jack have been cut out and welded back in, possibly not in the same locations.

So my advice is to arrange yours any way to can make it fit your vehicle.
