Mark V headlamp door hinge bushings - SOLVED

Post by v8moneypit »

Hi all,
One of the headlamp doors on my Mark V sticks when opening. Found a lot of slack in the pivot. The bush has crumbled so the door lifts before it folds if that makes sense.
Is anyone able to provide a source for these bushes please? I'm in the UK so would need someone who can ship outside the US. Although I do have friends in the US who could forward them for me if necessary.
If I can't locate any, I could makes some at work, but would be easier if they are available.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Does it really have bushings? The parts diagram suggests it might just be a bolt and a hole in the fiberglass door. You may need to get creative with some fiberglass filler.

I looked at my '79 parts car today, the front is smashed to pieces, but part of one door is still there, and it has a bushing. Sadly, it was broken in the crash, however I will enclose a picture.

I can send a better picture and dimensions, if you want to try to fab something up.

Looks like a shift linkage bushing. If there is something slightly different about it I would assume you could get creative with an exacto knife and make it work!

Thanks everyone. Apologies for not replying sooner.
From what I could see there was a bush in there and you've confirmed it.
I'll need to get the door off, then I should be able to replicate it in the lathe.

I think I know exactly what this bushing is and maybe its part number. My 70 Merc has headlamp covers and when I tore it down, I found and saved the bushings from it and the parts car. I think they are split bushings that fit into the door.

Does the broken piece shown above have a diagonal cut on one side?

And it has a shoulder on it. It's designed to snap into the hole. The slot allows it to kind of fold into the hole.
I'll see if I can find a PN in the MPCs.

I can't find where I put it, but I think, a small ridge on the outer circumference, the shoulder bolt holds it expanded, so it can't slip out.
Edit;
Okay, I found it, here is another picture, but not much better. I can feel the ridge with my fingernail, but it really doesn't show up in the picture. I also found a brass bushing that should work, it came from an old copy machine.

That’s the one. I haven’t dug for my stock as it’s buried in bins of Merc stuff. This could easily be turned on a lathe and may be available for t-birds of the early 70s and Ford LTDs.

Thanks again everyone. I've invested in the 5 volume shop manual and a parts manual on USB stick. Not easy things to navigate!!
I'll get the headlamp door off as soon as I get a chance. Too many other things getting in the way like house move, child problems, other car problems, etc.!!!

The bushing is base PN 13A164.

The 77 Mark V would use C9AZ-13A164-B. It uses one on each side of the door or a total of 4 per car.

Why it's not shown on the Mark V illustration... probably an omission. I had to find it in the 75 to 78 Mercury Marquis section to find a picture.

$20 for a used bushing.

$83 for a set (that LTD on eBay is not 4 of the same, but two inners, and two outers, probably the -A and -B versions).

Rearcounter.com lists 3 places with the -B versions Dennis-Carpenter.com has 70+ NOS of them.

I think I paid $10-15 for just the center bushing for my 70 Merc. And that was in 2018.

Well, v8moneypit, you get to live up to your name.

I would cheap out with a universal bushing, or fabricate something, but that's just me.
