1967 coronation coupe

Post by LithiumCobalt »

Sure looks like it could be the real deal. I am personally not a fan of the look, but a rare bird indeed.

According to the Automotivemileposts detail, there are some details that are incorrect with this car that makes it suspect, but AMP isn't always correct, either. Looks more like a '66 coronation coupe treatment of a '67

IN 1966 FORD /LINCOLN MADE THE SPECIAL SHOW CAR THE LINCOLN
CORONATION COUPE. AS THE STORY GOS LBJ PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED
STATES REALLY WANTED ONE STYLED AFTER THE 1966. THE COACH BUILDER
AT THE TIME LEHMANN-PETERSON REFUSED TO MAKE ANY MORE IN THE 1966
STYLE. IT WAS VERY COMMON PLACE IN THAT ERA TO HAVE A COACH BUILDER
CUSTOMIZE YOUR SPECIAL CAR. SO THE NEXT BEST THING WAS THE DERHAM
COACH BUILDERS. IT IS BELIEVED THAT DERHAM MADE ONLY 2 STYLED AFTER
THE 1966 CORONATION COUPE IN 1967. A BLUE 1967 FOR THE FORD MOTOR
COMPANY THAT OWNED THE DETROIT LIONS AND THE WHITE ONE FOR PRESIDENT
LBJ. IT WAS KNOWN THAT LBJ LOVED HIS LINCOLNS AND OWNED SEVERAL. THE

OF THE CAR. THE CAR WAS OWNED BY A CAR COLLECTOR IN THE FLORIDA AREA,
THEN A COLLECTOR IN THE MICHIGAN AREA THEN FINALLY IN NORTHERN IDAHO
FOR OVER 20 YEARS. OBVIOUSLY IT IS VERY HARD TO DOCUMENT MANY OF
THESE ISSUES BUT MANY PHONE CALLS WERE MADE TO LEHMAN, LBJ RANCH,
ETC. THE RANCH SAID MOST PEOPLE HAVE DIED FROM THAT ERA BUT THEY "COULD
SEE LBJ DOING SOMETHING LIKE THAT"

THE CAR WENT STRAIGHT FROM THE CAR MANUFACTURER TO THE COACH BUILDER!

ANYWAY THAT IS THE STORY THAT HAS FOLLOWED THE CAR FOR ALL THESE YEARS.

THE WORKMANSHIP IN THE CHANGE WAS PROFESSIONALLY DONE AND
COINCIDES WITH THE QUALITY OF WORK DERHAM WAS KNOWN FOR! THEY WERE
CONSIDERED THE BEST AND WERE HIRED BY MANY FAMOUS PEOPLE FOR SPECIAL
CAR CUSTOMS.

SOME OF THEIR SPECIAL CLIENTS WERE THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE:

POPE, PIUS X11, KING FAROUK, PRESIDENT EISENHOWER, GARY COOPER, RAYMOND
LOEEWY.

THEY WERE THE LONGEST LIVED COACH BUILDER AND THE ONLY CLASSIC ERA
COACH BUILDER THAT SURVIVED THE DEPRESSION!!

THE BROCHURE IN 1967 SHOWED DERHAM HIGHLIGHTING THE 1967 LINCOLN AS
ONE OF THEIR SPECIALTIES FOR CUSTOMIZATION. THEIR ORIGINAL IDEA FOR THE
1967 WAS TO HAVE A PORTHOLE IN THE REAR. PLEASE SEE PICTURE INCLUDED OF
THIS BROCHURE. BUT THEY WOULD CUSTOMIZE HOWEVER AND WHATEVER YOU
WANTED!

It’s a definitely a 67. The only exception I see is the window lockout/bypass switch knob being 66. All other details are 67 without question. The door panel pattern, the blow ford logo on the door sills, the door pull backing plate, the WIPER - WASH being in the lower dash (in 66 that’s where the headlamp switch is), the seat pattern, the steering column tilt, the hood ornament, the dash pad, the taillight bezels, and the wheel covers.

Even the VIN is 67.

The headlamp grilles or “doors” as ford called them, ARE 66, but easily swapped (like the wheel covers, but those have the BIGGER stars of 67.

It’s pretty much all 67.

Yep, definitely a '67. AMP mentions the '67 coronation coupes having gold paint. This one appears to be arctic white (photos and door tag confirm). C-pillar star is also different than the '67 CC photos on AMP. AMP mention the top corner of the door on 67's being rounded unlike the straight angle you see on the 66's and this car. So, I dunno. Regardless, not something I would go for. Just thought it was something people might be interested in.

That car has always been white. I see overspray on rubber gaskets at the top of the right door, but nowhere else.
There’s original-style rust stains forming on many mated panels, so my guess is that car has always been white. Even the inside of the engine bay is still white.

If it’s a replica, it’s decent. With the VIN, it should be possible to prove if it is authentic from ford.

Is this just a 2 dr coupe with a goofy looking vinyl top? I went through and read everything about it being a special order for LBJ but there was nothing in there about how it was constructed.
Another question, is the 2dr coupe of this generation the same wheelbase as the 4dr?

Basically yes, to both questions. However, the quarter-windows were clearly deleted, so the top is a little bit more than just an overdone vinyl overlay. How they filled it, I don't know; I'm guessing the same way Lehmann-Peterson did with the '66 they "coronated." But yes, the Coupés had the same understructure as the sedans, so the same wheelbase. They were basically the same car, save for the number of doors and roof pillars.

It is a bit surprising to see a Coupé with so many options installed...not all of them, but quite a hefty amount of them. As for the story of being made for LBJ, well, I'm in no position to refute it, but I'm also not one to take it as gospel without hard historical proof. That said, though, the story has become a legend, and all legends have some degree of basis in fact. That FL inspection sticker is really a blast from the past! I remember those from childhood like yesterday.

Slightly off-topic: Derham is known to have created a 2 door ‘61, and while you might think that would be cool, it completely destroys the proportions, and it just looks funny to me.

I see it now. The doors are a bit longer on the 2dr vs the 4dr. I noticed it with the relationship between the front seat and the B pillar location.

I'm pretty sure someone sent me a pic of it on a trailer shortly after it was on eBay. Someone I know was thinking about buying it but couldn't quite agree on a price.
