What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?

What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
More specifically, why won't the engine mounts for a 462 in a Continental sedan work for a sedan with a 460? They look very similar in pictures.

They are NOT interchangeable for those two engines. The block is not the same.
Even worse, there are some years in the 1960s the body style made a difference with the same engine

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
The mounting bosses on the 460 were moved because of the thinner water jacket and lean block design compared to the bulky and heavy 462 deep skirt design. The mounts are similar but not the same because they are going into the 68/69 continental chassis which didn’t change.
Actually, I made that up. But why is not important. They are different and the part numbers tell us that. That’s all that matters.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
I believe the why is important, because 462 engine mounts are cheap and plentiful, whereas 460 mounts are unobtanium. And if it were only a case of the holes being 3/8 off, as it seems to be from one of the cases from the link action posted, then maybe we should examine that some more instead of writing them off as simply "different", end of story. I wish those pictures still worked, because if the mounts are dimensionally more or less equal and it's simply a matter of modifying two holes, personally, as someone more interested in driving my Continental than in concourse-level accuracy, I'd be all over more people knowing that's the case so that these cars can be kept running instead of being dead in the water with the mounts removed waiting for the required rebuild turnaround time. [edit} I just ordered two el-cheapo 462 mounts that I can compare to the one good 460 mount I'm about to put in my car and I'll follow up with what I find.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
Are the 460 mounts different for 1970 Mark III than 1969 Mark III?
Or are 460 mounts different between Continental and Mark III?
Because I got engine mounts for my 70 Mark III (with 460) at a fast moving parts store. This was about 4 or 5 years ago. The mounts were in stock when I bought them. Some of the things on that car are weird. Not the engine mount purchase.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
If you’re desperate, put yourself into fabricator mode. Buy the 462 mounts, compare to the original mounts. Figure it out. Someone has to be the first.
Contact mike Casella through this forum and ask him if they revulcanize 69 Lincoln mounts at Then & Now. His last day before retirement is tomorrow.
The real why doesn’t matter. What matters is HOW they are different and HOW we can adapt to fix the problem.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
This is totally do-able IMO.
On the left is one cheapo aftermarket mount for a ‘68 Continental with a 462. According to its catalog, it fits a LOT of big old Fords, and as of 6/4/21 it runs $25/pair with free shipping on ebay. On the right is an OEM (or at least OEM style) left-side mount for a 68-69 with a 460. That’s about $125 including shipping right now on ebay. The other current alternative is $175 plus your core plus the turnaround and associated non-driving downtime to have a factory-style mount re-built.
The height and angle of the two are the same. The crossmember stud and one of the bolt holes are exactly the same size and position that they need to be. All this 462 mount needs is a tab welded on the end and properly drilled for the hole. For a right-side mount, the tab would be applied to the other end of the mount.
I’ve generally not been in favor of offshore-sourced mounts when I've considered them for other cars, because they are invariably made of thinner-gauge steel. These are no exception, being about 3/16 thick vs the factory 1/4 inch. But in this case it might be a blessing, because the thinner material will be easier to source, shape, weld and drill than the original. Also, the 462 mount's stud is 1/2 x 20 thread (not sure if this is same as factory) where as the stock 460 mount is 1/2 x 13.
I have a cheapo MIG welder and my welding skills put the "rude" in rudimentary, so I'll see what I can conjure up myself without employing a professional first, but I probably could just take them to a shop and get it done pretty cheap and come out way ahead in time, expense, or both compared to the presently understood alternatives.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
Just some thoughts, I am a terrible welder, so my approach would be to avoid it. A weld could become fatigued in time, and the heat may weaken the rubber bond, but a professional welder may have a workaround for that.
I would think about making a thicker and larger bracket, to mount over both holes (inside the crescent), so as the new mount is sandwiched between it and the block.
Even if you prefer the welding approach, this type of bracket could help mitigate the thinner metal you mentioned.
Another option is universal engine swap mounts (which look like a hockey puck, with studs top and bottom), and a fabricated plate on the engine, drilled to accept the stud.

I think any decent customer could fabricate compatible mounts generally that work.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
For 1969 Continental with 460
Autozone shows a passenger side mount for $53.49 (602749)
Which is made by Pioneer Automotive Industries in Mississippi https://pioneerautoinc.com/
No picture
Lifetime warranty
The left side is not shown either at Auto Zone or Pioneer
For a part like that that supports several hundred pounds and isn't that easily replaced I may not want to modify a part to fit a different application
And lifetime warranty usually means to me the part was made to a better standard. I hope I never have to use the warranty. But parts with a 90 day warranty usually are usually not as good. Exceptions do happen.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
Curious, Dave. I think we went through this with the 400 motor mounts. Only one side was available.
When someone posted pics of the two original mounts and the replacement mount for one side, it was determined that the replacement was interchangeable for either side.
Yes, the originals were mirrors, but they didn’t have to be.
I don’t know how they would do that with the 460 69 mount. It doesn’t look possible.

Yeah, the 460 mounts for the Continental have an offset that can't just turned around/mirrored. The 462 mounts I got are symmetrical with the same part number for both sides. Thanks action for the autozone link, I have one on the way.

Seems weird there is not one listed for the other side.MFE wrote: Thanks action for the autozone link, I have one on the way.
For 1970 Mark III with 460 I got a set of engine mounts 3 years ago from O'Reillys.
Because of time limits when I am at that vehicle, I have not installed them yet.
They are still available at a whopping $12.50 each side
For the same year Continental no engine mounts are available.
Seems weird the same engine for same year Continental versus Mark would come up with a different engine mount
I would assume the engine is in a different position relative to the body and/or radiator. However I am just making that up.

Re: What's the difference between 462 and 460 engine mounts?
For AutoZone the results are similar to O'Reillys
70 Mark III has both mounts. The vendor is a company called MRC. https://showmetheparts.com/mrc/
The left side is the same price at $12.50
The right side is $28.50
For 1970 Continental only the right side is listed. Which is that Pioneer mount for $53.50. (602749)
And just because I like wasting time on the internet. ....
NAPA lists for 1970 Mark III a right side engine mount for $18.20.
And no left side mount
For 1970 Continental there are 11 mounts listed with pictures.
Some of the pictures do not look anywhere close to working
Pricing ranges from $10 to $134
Because the above data is for 1970 and you have a '69 with a split year for engine choices ..... I plugged that date in and came up with the same 11 choices.
However when I selected exact fit, it seems like none work. The website is weird
And a phone call to NAPA may yield the other side that you have not ordered.
Good luck!
