Red 1965 Lincoln Sedan Build - Project Red Sled

Post by bd94s10 »

So my buddy Tony "Boss" Bolin has more projects than I do. He has 8-9 Lincolns (a few are parts cars) and we are constantly on the hunt for anything 60s Lincoln related. He picked up a black 64 sedan recently and drove it home from S. FL. He finished buying a laundry list of parts from all the top vendors to airbag it when he came across a cherry 65 sedan. He flew out to Dallas last week and checked it out and made a deal. It was picked up the next day and shipped to Tampa. He had it delivered this past Saturday. Within a few hours he had the column dropped and ripped apart... something I do not have the patience for but he knocked it out. Anyway, we dropped the car off for the suspension install. We would have done it ourselves but with no lift and little extra time he decided to have his friend knock it out.

Details: 65 sedan with 72,xxxx miles, garage kept entire life and was owned by apparently some rich folk in Dallas area. An employee of theirs was paid for a job with this car and something else. He sold the car to my friend Tony aka Boss Bolin.

What the car needs/needed: rag joint (finished), rebuilt column (finished), paint cleanup, good detail, fuel filler neck (piece in trunk), new battery, etc. Like I said the car is super nice.

Parts he has been collecting to "build" one of his cars which so happened to be this newly acquired 65.

-BCFab rear suspension kit (all powdered gloss black)
-Choppin Block full front kit with upper/lower control arms
-Fitech EFI system
-Devious Customs aluminum fuel cell w/ Aeromotive fuel pump
-ViAir compressors (black), bags, fittings, airline
-Powdered engine parts (from parts car) done by Sharp Customs (intake, valve covers, suspension, etc.)
-Hub caps w/ dings removed and fully polished (sent to CA)
-Aluminum radiator from Radiator Lady + fans
-Polished surge tank from Radiator Lady

I'm sure I'm missing some items but you get the idea. The car will be super nice w/ all the best parts. It will be built to cruise. Some additional items that need to be addressed:

-Fuel filler piece inside the trunk swapped out (previous owner put a radiator hose in this spot like WTF?) - picked up a spare from Lincoln Land today
-Fuel leak under the car near the gas tank (before he puts on the efi and installs the new tank he may have to get this taken care of ASAP to cruise the car)
-Battery swapped

Much more to come. I wanted to start a thread to document everything we do to the car. Now that I'm DONE w/ Photobucket I'll try to figure out the best way to load pics here.

Back together. Even Chris from Lincoln Land was surprised how quickly he got it out, apart and back together!

New collar he picked up from Tractor Supply. Believe it or not the kit he got from Lincoln Land had the wrong size piece.

Much much more to come on this build. I'll document it for my buddy and for others here to enjoy.

I don't have the contact info handy but he sent these to California to have the dents removed and the caps polished. They came out awesome. The guy won't deal with shipping so you have to mail a prepaid shipping label with your parts. His daughter helps with the orders but I'll get the info for anyone interested. He sent these out for the idea to see how good the guy was. He has a ton of caps laying around but picked 5 to send and we were amazed. He will probably thow these on the car for now for Slamfest in a couple of weeks.

Great looking car. I don't recall seeing very many in red. I think a lot of Lincoln owners in that era went for the more sedate, conservative look. But the red really makes the style of the body stand out. Love it - and with the red interior too. You can name her "The Lady In Red".

The hubcaps look great too. I'd be interested. Question, did his polishing remove the black accent paint between the ribs or was it already gone when he got them? Wonder if he has an option for restoring them to original.

Thanks for the comments gentlemen. I like that name. I'll mention it to him. I agree in that I have not seen many red cars. It is super clean overall.

That is funny you asked about the hub caps. When I first saw them I thought the same thing about the black on them. I noticed that as well. Let me get the info you can contact the guy. I want to say it was like $125-150 for dents to be removed and polished fro all 5! I still can't believe it. Like I said he did have to send a prepaid shipping label back. He works for FedEx so that was easy for him.

A few guys in the Suicide Slabs Facebook group have used this same guy and are astonished by his work. Below is the contact info.

His website only talks about restoring boat propellers so hubcaps must be a sideline. Think I'll email him and see.

Yes, that is my understanding. If your on Facebook jump into the Suicide Slabs closed group. It is Lincoln owners only. If not I would drop him a line. His daugher he helping him with the workload I understand. Someone from the Suicide Slabs knew him or knew of him and that is how we found him.. I guess he fixes and polishes peak moldings etc. as well. Hope this helps and keep us posted as to what you decide.

Helped Tony the other night up at his buddy's shop. Car came out great. Just under 2 weeks and a lot was accomplished. See below. I tried to put pics in a timeline.

Kev's Classics in Spring Hill Florida performed the work for Tony Bolin. He had his local interior peeps make the red carpet kit for the trunk.

After he picked up the red 65 2 weeks ago he found this 65 vert in Lakeland a dealership was selling. He got it for a GREAT deal. I drove the car the other night and it runs great. Our friend Blair went through and got the 4 windows working and swapped the brake booster in a day or so. It needs very minor things. The worst part is the deck lid. It is solid but needs to be taken down to bare metal and some rust spots fixed.

So the whole plan was to get the car finished up and looking good for Slamfest which was 10/14 & 10/15/2017. Lots of people looked at the car and it was a hit.
