65 project prep

Post by PHILLYDEAN »

Ok so starting on 10 December I have a three car heated garage with a lift until the 4 of January. So I'm trying to get as much done with my buddies as I can. I have a list from a bunch of people on the forum to help with a lot of must fixes, but my problem is trying to find the best places to buy them. Bakersauto has a lot but they are expensive. Finding each of these for the best price is the time consuming part. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

List that I want to complete:

Bought
Level 3 air ride

Still need
Brakes and brake hose
All fluids changed
Fix window motors
Battery tray
Try to fix column shift detent so it actually locks in each gear
Timing gear
Switch steering box bushing
And any other suggestions

All of the info you need is here on this forum. You just have to search for it.

Bakers is the last place to buy things, but it IS a place where parts are available.

Check RockAuto.com for common engine and chassis parts.

And don't forget the all encompassing Usual Suspects list here: http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb3/v ... =7&t=14365

The battery tray for a mustang is pretty similar at a fraction the cost just have to cut off a mounting bracket. I posted about it I here a while ago.

Burnski is right on the Mustang tray. I have 2 and I'll sell you 1 or both. They are brand new. I ended up not putting both or even the 1 battery back in the front and I'm relocating them to the trunk. LMK and I'll ship it to you. I'll give you a fair price. I'll look back and see what I paid. I researched for several years before I picked up my 67 in May 2009. I've done a lot of homework on these cars right here in the forums. Here is what I can tell you.. and believe me.. I'm a guy that searches to find the best prices and the best quality.

-Brakes and brake hose: cheapest price on the 2 front brake hoses is Lincoln Old Parts. Talk to Kelly and tell her Jason from Lincoln Addict referred you. I live about 45 mins from there and picked mine up. There is a guy on eBay that had similar price but Old Lincoln was even cheaper. http://www.lincolnoldparts.com
-All fluids changed - I'd do your research on this. I'm about to fire more motor after a 4 year build. I won't get into it as there is much debate on this topic: http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb3/v ... =1&t=18359
-Fix window motors - you can buy the new motors at like Advance Auto Parts. Go on RetailMeNot.com and get the coupon codes. I do in-store pickup.. if you live near one.. If not you can have them mailed. I do separate orders often times to get he best prices since I can use $40 off $100. I'm not sure how good these are. They have several on their site. http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/dorm ... erm=window -- if you want yours fixed or want some OG ones call Tim at The Lincoln Ranch. Tell him I sent you. http://www.lincoln-ranch.com
Battery tray - stated above. I have one and will sell to you if you want. There is a thread on the install in this forum.
Try to fix column shift detent so it actually locks in each gear - I've read about this subject. From memory I think it is a bushing. Call Tim at Lincoln Ranch for info.
-Timing gear - I got mine from Kanter.com originally. https://www.kanter.com - they have a catalog and will start sending to you. They have like 10% off codes depending on if you spend $100 or $500 +
-Switch steering box bushing - I recommend the metal ones. J. Brewer on eBay had the best price when I got mine awhile back. He gives you the hardware. Be warned when I put my steering box in the vice to get the OG isolators off they were a bitch to get off. Def need a vice and a breaker bar! http://www.ebay.com/itm/1963-1968-Linco ... 2601055730
-And any other suggestions:

--get a manual for the car. I got mine on eBay years ago. It really comes in handy when you need torque specs
--become friends with Tim as mentioned above. He has John Cashman's old place and has a TON of parts
--Join Suicide Slabs on Facebook. This is GREAT resource.
--Join Instagram if your not on there already. There are many Lincoln guys on there and a good bit of info you will learn
---once you join follow:
----a page I run @lincolnaddict https://www.instagram.com/lincolnaddict/ / @suicide_slabs - https://www.instagram.com/suicide_slabs/ / Lincoln Boys https://www.instagram.com/_lincolnboys_ - Mario is a GREAT guy and a GREAT resource as well from Lincoln Boys

Have fun and don't get stressed out. I've learned a ton doing everything on my car. Many things I had no idea I could or would even do I'm been able to accomplish by researching and getting the tools I need. My thread can be found here: http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb3/v ... 42&t=41559

if you want to go to a more standard ground 34/78 battery and dont care too much about exact authenticity (just want it to look stock) then you can go with the 67 mustang battery tray which uses J hooks instead of an end-tang. heres some battery tray info: http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb3/v ... =2&t=48854

heres the steering column bushing, ive searched extensively and bakers was the best deal on it: http://www.bakersauto.com/BUSHING-LOWER ... /LWRBSH64/

timing set, best price I found here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/150864649800

i made my own steering box bushings, i bought 1' of 1.5" diameter 6061 aluminum rod stock from a local alloy shop for $15cdn. heres some info on making your own bushings: http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb3/v ... 9&p=371712

dual master conversion: http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb3/v ... 1&p=372344

you can get an OCR PDF shop manual for a $20 donation to the forum, way cheaper than a paper version elsewhere: http://www.thelincolnforum.net/phpbb3/v ... =7&t=28049

Also, like Jason said, don't get discouraged. These cars will fight you every step of the way and expect to have to do some things at least twice. Be prepared to spend triple (or more) on parts versus a camaro or mustang but its so worth it to have such a unique vehicle. Also if something does not feel right, walk away and come back later. I find that if I "sleep on it" my mind will usually solve the problem while im asleep and I have the answer in the mornings.

I was in your shoes not long ago - I bought my 64 in November of 2015 and knew nothing about these cars prior to that.

Biggest suggest is SEARCH and READ as much as you possibly can on this forum. Pretty much every question ever has been answered. Also buy the shop manual and read it cover-to-cover. then read it again. There are so many quirky things that you will remember and you will go back to the manual because you recall seeing something about it.

Burnski speaks the truth! A few years back I started thinking.. hey I live in the Tampa Bay Area. I need to make contact with the key folks around me that can answer my questions / sell me parts I need. That is when I met Chris from Lincoln Land, my mechanic Blair, Kelly at Old Lincoln Parts and Tim at Lincoln Ranch. To me there are PLENTY of resources, including this site, to help anyone with these cars. The more you do yourself the more you will save. Some things are just out of my league so I rely on the true experts for those items. But to be honest, I've done a TON more than I ever thought I'd be able to, which is super rewarding.

Def get on Instagram. Years ago I met Richard Lund and Syko Simmons from Suicide Slabs on Instagram. Richard was asking me questions about his 61. Now he has 50k + followers on Suicide Slabs and has another full build he is doing with a Coyote swap. The sky is the limit.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I think I have a really good start now and it cut way down on the price matching. As soon as I get started a will be posting my progress and pictures.
