Re: engine number
Look on the top of the block on the driver's side, just below the head on the rear.
That's where it is on the 460.
Re: ENGINE NUMBER LOCATION MARK III 460CI
If it's not there, keep looking. There are castings of numbers all over.

Re: engine number
The casting number, which is like the block part number is above the starter on the right-hand side of the block.

Re: engine number
Those are just casting numbers. They all had the same numbers. The only time Ford serialized the engines was for the Mark II, I believe.

Re: engine number
Ford started serializing with the 460 & 429 in 1968. Not sure about the 400, though. Never pulled the motor.

Re: engine number
I found no stamped numbers on my 460, only casting numbers. I believe those were for runs of parts, not individualized serial numbers. I could be wrong, though.

Re: engine number
It should be there, Barry. If you have a 460 in your Limo and the motor is out, look for the SN based on this below.

Dan Szwarc wrote:OK, I found the mysterious engine number location on the 460 (and its little sister, the 429).
It is located at the rear of the block, driver's side, at the top of the deck just below the head.
The number stamped will match the first two digits of the VIN (in your case, it will be 1Y) and the last 6-digits (8XXXXX).
These pics are from the original motor from my 1970 Mercury Marquis.
It is badly stamped, like each digit was done by hand. If yours are missing, simply add your own.

Yes, as the VIN. The year, the plant, and the 6-digit VIN Serial number. Check your block.Barry Wolk wrote:Are those numbers on the build sheet?

Re: engine number
So if I'm reading this right (and pardon me if it's a naïve question), there is no such thing as "matching numbers" for a 1966, is that correct?
