1975-79 Continental Mini-Vent Window Trim Fix!

Post by traxxasislife »

Hi All,

I thought I would share my solution to the split mini vent power windows on my 77 Town Car. The rubber tip piece of the track had disintegrated and this piece seems to be unobtainium. I took measurements and did some eyeballing to create a similar part using the free CAD tool TinkerCAD and 3D printed a suitable replacement part
The rubber window trim piece (off of a parts car)

The finished piece I designed

Not perfect, but much better than a gaping hole

I can share the model if anyone is interested

Oh thats a neat trick! One of my vent windows fell off completely and broke inside the door. Never thought of using my printers for things like this. Did you use a flexible plastic type?

I might actually have a vent window glass or two. I have side windows from the 79 I partied out.

Parted out.

I’m not changing it. It was fun!

Hey, I don’t have a 3d printer but am in need of these pieces, could I pay you to make me a pair? If not I’d take a copy of the file and probably look into buying a printer, but figured I’d ask first since I don’t have much of a use for a printer. Thanks!

Hey, I've got a few printers (17 actually) on hand. I could print a handful up and send to anyone that needs them. Just let me know the material you want to use and color. My thoughts are possibly nylon/carbon fiber blend? I usually use petg and pla but you definitely don't want those sitting in the sun.

Edit: looking a bit more, a flexible TPU should work well as long as it doesn't become too flexible.

Although I don't have a Towncar/ towncoupe, it is great to see people making more parts for our cars. kudos!

How hard is it to make the file the 3d printers use? I've always thought that would be cool to get into but some of the stuff people do is pretty intricate.

I can get the file from the OP and print some. He already designed it. It's not terribly hard, I learned it all on my own with YouTube and can make some pretty intricate stuff. It's just deign, print, test. Over and over till it's right!

The forum would be happy to host any 3D-printed files but there are plenty of 3D sharing sites out there. They would simply be links in a post, maybe stickied.

I don't mind printing at all. As long as postage is covered, I'll ship. When OP gets back on, I'll get the file and print up plenty for anyone who needs them.
