Anyone have this trunk lock part?

Paint, sheet metal, hood ornaments, trim, vinyl tops, emblems, seats, carpet, dashboards, etc. Paint cleaning and detailing messages should be posted in the Cleaning and Detailing sub-forum.

Dan, here are the only numbers I can pull off the part, looks like it goes back to 1975!

D5VB- 60 43216-AA
D5 = 75 (first year used)
V = Lincoln
B = Bdy
60 = body type (like sedan, coupe, etc.) It's defined in the shop manual or MPC.
43216 = base PN
AA = revision
Screenshot 2024-01-10 at 8.08.16 PM.png
75/ = 75 and up (to 79)
D = Lincoln Continental

D7VY-60 43216-A part number would replace any previously used part prior to 77 (service PN).

Sometimes parts marked with VB get changed to VY or vice-versa. Sometimes not.

That is a real Scooby-Doo mystery there. To add to the mystery, none of the '75/6 cars in the yard had this plate; they had integral sheet metal in that spot, with bolt holes for the latches to attach directly to the lids. That plate came out of the trunk of a '78/9 donor; it was already removed from the lid and sitting inside the trunk, and the lid had a large cavity cut out where the integral sheet metal was in the older lids. That cavity was not a hack job; it was factory. A test fit confirmed that plate was originally there.

Sure doesn't make sense to me to make a part in '75 and then not use it on the production lines until '78. So, it looks like my observations of fit were not quite accurate.

Part supplier issues and multiple sourcing of trunk parts is one possibility. Not all cars were always built the same way for whatever reason.

Sometimes there’s a “until xx-xx-xxxx” and “after xx-xx-xxxx” dates indicated in the MPC, but things may have gotten messy for Ford around this part.

It always pays to closely examine your car and the parts you need!

VB is part of an engineering number, and found on the part itself, especially if it's part of an assembly. The corresponding actual Ford part number will always be VY, as found on the original package. Sometimes you will see VY on a part also, especially on a stand alone part, but usually with a sticker or tag rather than as part of the part itself. Often, even the base numbers of the engineering and part numbers for the same part are different.
