Leather dye match/code

Post by BobCT »

Now that I’ve established the paint code on my ‘69 MK3, I have one small area on the drivers seat that could use some dye.

I’ve had great luck getting dye matched for my newer Mercedes but the company used the VIN for the mix.

Is there an interior color code on my Mark? It looks like “black” to my eyes, I’m not sure if they had any variations on black for ‘69.

Thanks
Bob

Black was black at that time. Do you have a door tag inside the driver door? Not sure if 69 had them or if that started in ‘70. If you have a tag, it will snow you the interior trim code. A Marti report would give you all the details or paint, trim, options, production stats, etc.

I love black. Think shoe polish or get really cheap with a magic marker. Wayne

The leather in 69 Marks was glossy. I don’t know about dying to match, but I recommend a good cleaning and conditioning and leave it be.

If it the top of the back seats where it’s sun faded and crispy, be very gentle. It is likely dry rotted and will tear the moment you apply any pressure. It’s probably too late. A 54 year-dead cow skin isn’t going to rejuvenate.

Yes, I just checked the door tag and it’s 2AA so confirmed black. I think the car has always been garaged, I’m going to check the top of the backseats now.

IMO, Leather seats are like a leather jacket, they look better with age!
Wayne nailed it, touch up the worst spots, but enjoy the character of that 54 year dead cow!

I might give Jim Wallace Interiors a call to see if they have any suggestions to make it better or preserve it... https://sites.google.com/site/1960slincolns/
