1955 Capri
After too many years in someone else's garage, Jim Westervelt's 55 Capri is back in the neighborhood (See this car in the Mar-Apr 08 LCOC magazine) So we've got some questions, who is the resident Guru for 55s these days? We've got Tom Grifith's authenticity manual, but he seems to have retired from being a guru. Charlie Blais seemed fairly knowledgeable about these cars, but alas, Charlie has gone to Wixom eternally. Does anyone know the exact location of the underhood light, which was an option? we've got one, but don't know where to put it. (Please don't say put it under the Hood!) Wayne

Re: 1955 Capri
Wayne,
I'm no guru of that year, save for knowing about Car Life declaring it the safest car in America that year...but it surprised me that nobody has answered. Having done some Googling of my own, I can see why nobody answered: I cannot find a single surviving example that has an underhood light. I've seen several with A/C, with auto-dimmers...not one with an underhood light.
Possibly the only thing I could find that may be helpful, though not giving an immediate answer, is a site that has listings of literature on that year Lincoln. The site is autopaper.com; I saw a bunch of different booklets, to include owner's manuals and service manuals, there.

Thanks, Tony, I was about to add some crickets to this post. Thanks for your thoughts. We may have to just stick it under the hood... Wayne

Is this a "dealer" option, or "factory" option? If this were an assembly line option, it would have a correct location, however, an over the counter option, may not.
This type of option was often sold through the parts department, for installation on any Ford product, the service department would just find a suitable location.

Another thing to look for, sometimes the body part will have dimples where the options are to go, they are only drilled if that part is installed. See if the hood has some dimples in the same pattern as your part.

There, finally!! I tried to copy that link yesterday on my last response, but either the Forum server or my computer (or both) was acting the bloody fool. So you don't have to waste time surfing the home link, Wayne, this one is more specific to '55 Lincoln literature being sold by that outfit.

Sorry guys, getting logged out before I can reply. thanks for the help, I don't remember seeing any dimples, but will look again. I will tell Brother Bob to spring for the book, he's a literature hound anyway. Wayne

Re: 1955 Capri
A friend recently completed a '55 vert restoration and here are his remarks - "I believe that light is mounted on the under hood cross rib right of center, maybe about a foot in, between the hood center and the right side. Not sure where the wire hooks in, but I think it crosses over to the brake light switch hot lead, held up with those aluminum wire ties". He has not installed the option on his car at this time & will send a photo when completed (currently traveling in Europe). I had the light on my '56 vert & believe they were the same for both years. I sold my '56 a few years ago and will try & locate a photo for you. The '56 manual lists the light but directions for install were included in the original box.

Re: 1955 Capri
That is the way that the light is installed on my 1953. I seem to remember a section of the shop manual that dealt with accessories, but I cannot find it in my online manual. My hard copy is not available at this time.

Thanks, Tom, we've got a 1999 Navigator project going on right now. (Don't ask why) Haven't forgotten the Capri...which is far more important. Wayne
