Well, it's always an adventure.....

Had a good trip down to the show until we hit the SC/Georgia line. Just after crossing the border, Robin wanted to stop. We pull into the state rest stop and just as I'm turning into the parking space, the car dies. Coast in, put it in park and re start the car. Hmmm, have gas, started right up again, must be OK. Check under the hood and don't see anything out of the ordinary (or so I thought).

She gets back into the car and we start to re enter 95 S and I get hesitation. Hmmm, must be a clogged line or something. So I pull off at the next exit and as I'm going down the ramp a backfire with some black smoke and the car dies again. Come to a stop, re start the car and get to the gas station. Look under the hood again, looks OK (again, or so I thought), start up the car again and as I'm revving the engine, hesitation and stalling.

Call my mechanic and he says check the distributor. Well, I do know what that is and as I'm following the wires to make sure they're properly attached, I notice the coil hanging down by the wire. This can't be good! I try to text him a picture but due to the C-130 crash is Savannah (which we later found out was only about 3 1/2 miles east of where we were,) I didn't have enough bars to send it. Got a local to take a few pix and send to him. My mechanic tells me that if I can somehow attach it under the expansion tank and the car runs, I should be OK until I get to Florida. Of course this is the one time I forget to put the duct tape back in the car so I scrounge around trying to find something. Saw a local Department of Public Works truck in the parking lot and got some of those wire flags they place to mark the underground lines and tie it up to the expansion tank. Worked well; made it to Bradenton (about 400 miles) with no problems. Checked it each time we stopped for gas to make sure all was well.

Thursday morning I texted Chris Dunn the picture. He was getting in Thursday night and told me he'd look at it. He took a peek and told me it looked like the bracket broke and Eric (one of the mechanics) would be able to fix it. So first thing Friday morning, ran the car up to Clearwater and 3 hours later, had it fixed. Other than the coil bracket braking, no issues at all coming down. Drove with the cruise on most of the time and averaged like 13.5 MPG on the way down.

Small show; only like 20 cars to be judged and maybe a half a dozen or so exhibition. After judging today, 2 really cool modified Lincolns showed up. Apparently there are a few guys who love the cars but modified them. Met a guy who entered his modified 65 and the 2 that came late were his buddies. One was a really neat 65 with an TV screen behind the front seat for the kids to play games. The other one was a lowered 68 Coupe. John took pictures and you'll be able to see them in the next Comments. While they are not my cup of tea, it was really nice to see some new cars. Nicely done modifications.

Yesterday John Walcek, Robin & I along with Jim Murphy from Georgia almost got arrested. John had arranged for us to get some pictures taken inside the grounds of the Ringling Museum. Well, apparently the woman to told John it was OK didn't have the authority to do so and we were sternly told to leave immediately. John kept on pleading with the security guard to let him take one more picture at the Banyan Tree by the house and we were told that if we didn't leave immediately, we we would be charged with criminal trespassing. That's when John gave in, sort of. As we were being escorted off the grounds, I stopped and asked the security guard if I could wait for Jim and John hopped out and pleaded with the security guard one last time, to no avail. We met Jim at the gate and went back to the hotel. John did get some pictures, which I think will also be in Comments.

Overall nice time. Heading out tomorrow for Hilton Head.

Coil bracket broken. First time I have ever heard of that. That is weird. Those things are not under that much stress and they have some meat to them.

After you replace it post a pic of the broken pieces.

So sorry to hear of your misfortune. What a strange thing to be going wrong. I'm glad that it all worked out. I'm going to look at my bracket asap, as last fall I put a new coil in just because I was doing a bit of a tune up. Other than nearly being arrested, I'm hoping you both had a wonderful time. Wayne

But wait, there's more!!

So we leave Bradenton for Hilton Head. About 10 miles south of the GA/SC border on I 95 N, we enter a construction zone where they are milling the road for repaving. It's like 9 pm, single lane slow moving stop & go traffic. Go to slow down and the brake pedal goes to the floor! Pull behind the cones on the side where they are milling behind us and behind a police car. Open the master cylinder and see virtually no fluid. Well, it's not the master cylinder since I replaced it when I lost it on the way to Denver in 2016. Get the flashlight and look underneath and see the front driver's side tire is covered in brake fluid. OK, so it's a wheel cylinder.

Now, some of you may know that I'm getting a parts box together to keep in the car for my trip out west. Bought a bunch of stuff at NAPA but couldn't find brake shoes or wheel cylinders, so I ordered them from Chris Dunn. Just happened to pick them up at the show. Lucky for me I have them.

I called triple A and ended up waiting 3 hours for a tow truck to take us to the resort in Hilton Head (only 40 miles up the road). Meanwhile, the Sheriff is telling me that I have to get the car to the other side of the highway because the milling machine is getting closer and "isn't gonna stop". I keep telling her I don't have any brakes and she says "that's OK, I'll stop traffic". So, I move the car to the other side to wait for the flatbed to get me. End up getting to the resort around 2 AM.

While we were waiting, Robin starts looking for garages near the resort and finds one about 2 miles away. I called them first thing in the morning and they said to bring the car over. It's a NAPA garage (like I use at home) and their website shows some old cars that they have worked on. So, we tow the car to the garage for him to look at. Later this afternoon, I get the call; it's not the wheel cylinder, but a broken rubber hose (not real clear which one). Should have it back sometime tomorrow.

Always an adventure!!

Ah the joys of old car ownership. Glad you ended up safe. Just makes for a more interesting journey and more stories to tell. To paraphrase Captain Ron, “if anything is gonna happen, it’s gonna happen out there”.

Fortunately a '63 Lincoln brake hose is common.

NAPA online is showing front and rear brake hoses are in stock. Left and right front are interchangable. And at my local NAPA they are only $16 each.

I am going to replace all of the brake hoses on my '70 Mark III this summer. I wish those brake hoses were as easy to obtain and that cheap to buy.

Mr. Cohen, you have the most amazing and entertaining Lincoln stories! Glad all worked out and let me write that I admire you "driving" your car! Good for you my friend, hope we can catch up in Minneapolis in July. After all, it's a lot close than Denver

Is that an electric charging station you've got plugged into the 63? I'm on vacation this week, and I'm on my way to the shop this morning to work on a couple of cars, may even pull the heads on my 63 for new gaskets. Wish me luck. Wayne

Not just any electric car charging station, but a Tesla Supercharger, usable only by Teslas (which Stu happens to also own/lease).
