Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition

The Lincoln Continental 80th Anniversary Coach Door Edition has been officially unveiled. Pricing, above $100,000 MSRP, is about a $20,000 or so premium over a loaded up "traditional doors" 2019 Continental Black Label model.

Nice market test. I think they could sell 1000, but could they sell more?

That is nice! I think the barn-door configuration gives the whole look a better look. Well, we'll see how long it lasts. I know that, unless the factory suffers a near-catastrophic failure of its quality-control program, those doors cannot be legitimately lampooned like the last series was. The changes in latch safety over the decades will make it impossible for even a suicidal person to jump out--so they should be called "suicide-proof" doors.

This will partially depend on how the other (non-80th Anniversary) coach door models are offered. Will they also only be top of the line "Black Label" cars or will you be able to get them as less equipped, lower trim level models? I imagine Lincoln would be looking to offer them on lower trim versions too.

Yes.

It will also ride on a 6-inch longer wheelbase (providing even more rear legroom) than the "traditional doors" Continental.

It's interesting that Lincoln decided to market this 80th Anniversary Edition Continental as a 2019 model while the 50th Anniversary Continental was sold as a 1990 (not 1989) model. Sadly, Continental sales in the U.S. this year will probably only be a little over 1/8th what they were back in 1990.

While I'm happy that there will be a "Coach Door Edition", however building only 80 seems odd. By building more, FoMoCo would be able to amortize the cost of the modification over more units, thus lowing the manufacturing cost. Americans have gone crazy over CUVs, SUVs, and pick-ups. The Ford division plans to end all sedan productions, save for the Mustang. It would appear the platform on which the Continental and MKZ is built upon will disappear. Lincoln, (assuming the current CEO does not kill the division) will only sell SUV type vehicles. An end on an era. At least there will be 80 cool Continenals

The current Continental, MKZ and Nautilus all use versions of the C/D4 platform however, all three had been expected to move to Ford's new modular C/D6 platform (being used for the new Aviator) when the next generations were introduced. Given the state of the sedan market in the U.S., the future of the Continental and MKZ are in question but if Ford decides to discontinue them it won't be because of lack of an available platform.

Although Cadillac discontinued its compact ATS sedan this year and will be discontinuing the large CT6 and XTS sedans next year (at least in the U.S.) as well as the midsize CTS, they still plan to offer other new sedans here (CT5 and CT4) and I hope Lincoln will continue to offer at least one sedan as well.
