Is this 1979 Mark V a Cartier Edition?

Details such as correct colors, plating material, inspection marks, orientation, and even the number of wipes that should occur for a vacuum-powered windshield wiper system after pushing the "wash" button.

Is this 1979 Mark V a Cartier Edition?

Post by PK79 »

A lot of stuff seems to match that edition, including the opera window signature, but other items don't, mostly the outside color along the bottom. Was that an option that could be changed at purchase? I love this car no matter what, it was the same model I learned to drive in back in high school in the 80's, but I'm just curious about its history.

Sure looks like Cartier.

The brochure may help. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1979-LINCOLN-M ... SwNcBfZkfx

The warranty sticker on the driver's door post, what is the color code?'
What is the DSO?
Or better yet post a picture of that warranty sticker.

It is not unusual for a dealership to perform a service or sell items to customize the new vehicle for a fee. What would be more common would be change made by an owner.

Just a shot in the dark, but, is the lower paint colour bumpy? Ford of Canada started using "duraguard" around '78 I think, and some people would have that applied to cars which didn't come with it. Lincoln's were not built here, so I'm not sure if they had duraguard from the factory.
Normally, it would be covered with the stock colour, but on a custom application?

Seeing the interior would also help.

Depending on where this car is the different colored bottom could also be from rust repairs. It used to be very common to do that.

Also, the trunk doesn't have the Cartier logo, was that something that came off easily?

No worries about the reply time. Not sure most of us would reply faster.

The exterior paint colors shows a 52 code with a space and a YU. I believe the reason for two codes .... a tu-tone exterior color

The DSO of 21 is Atlanta.
The only reason that is significant is the vehicle is a regular order. Not a custom made vehicle that the company made as a one time build. (Yes that did happen)

Of note for the designer series, of the four choices Cartier sold the most by far over any of the other 3 choices. With a MSRP over $22,000 it was a very expensive ride for the time and showed that there was demand for that kind of individuality in high end vehicles. Today Lincoln Navigator Black Label STARTS at $98,000+. Most everything is standard but destination and a few options will push the MSRP into six figure land

I don't think it was possible for even a fully loaded 1979 Mark V Cartier (or any Designer trim) to reach $22,000 MSRP. That price point was pretty much reserved for the top of the line Mark V Collector's Series. I believe most Mark V Cartier (and others) were in the $16,000 to $18,000 MSRP range.

I am not sure if a Marti report will identify a Cartier, but it will give you some other info that may be of interest.

The logo was merely a decal. Over time it probably came off. I worked for a number of years at a Lincoln/Mercury dealership and I've very familiar with the 79 Mark V. The Cartier Edition was a great seller for us and I saw a lot of them. Other than the two tone paint treatment of vehicle that you provided, it appears to be a Cartier Edition. Most of the ones we sold had the leather interior, but we did sell some that had the same interior cloth interior as the one pictured. Frankly, I've never seen a Mark V with the type of paint treatment shown. My guess it was added after the sale.

It certainly is a beautiful car and the two tone treatment complements it nicely. From the discussions it seems that the two tone was added and not done at the factory. A possible “tell” is the masking line visible at the rear wheel lip beyond the body side trim. The mask line appears to be even with the lower edge of the side molding. A typical factory two tone would be masked somewhere in the middle of the molding placement so that the molding can conceal the masking line. Out of curiosity you may want to take a close look at the underside edge of the body side moldings to see if you can see a paint line or masking marks. The factory was not likely to ever do a two tone finish after body trim was installed. In any event it looks great and makes your car just a bit unique from the others. Now if you could find and speak with either the original or subsequent owners…..
