Unusual Codes on VIN

Post by Diniakos »

First off, I know how to decode a VIN and have a shop manual for my '65 and have attempted to do just that. The issue I have found is there are two codes on the Warranty Plate that do not correspond to anything in the decoder. I have searched the googles for answers and have come up with some weird ones. Here is my VIN - 5Y825425292 - The first thing that I can't figure out is what the engine code of "5" means. In my manual, there are two choices, N for 430 CID and 7 for 430 CID, low compression export. There is no "5" I did some searching and found that Ford/Mecury/Linclon sometimes use "5" to represent an 8 cylinder 240 CID motor low compression for export. I can assure you that I do not have a 240 CID motor in this beast. The second weirdness is on the upper part of the warranty plate under Axle, it says "2". Again, not a choice that I see in my manual or anywhere on the interwebs. The choices I have are 1, 3, A, C, but no "2"

If anyone can help identify what I am looking at, that would be great. Maybe it is just a mistake on the VIN and Plate or this is a Million Dollar unique Lincoln :)

Quite possibly mistakes on the stamping. What does the VIN on the inside of the RH fender say right above the opening for the upper control arm? VIN should match the data plate. It's not uncommon for there to be mistakes on the VIN tags.

Check the official VIN in the engine bay above the upper control arms. It’s upside down so you can read it while you bend over the fender to read it.

The tag has a typo in it. Plain and simple.

Thanks but I am having a hard time finding it. Driver or passenger side?

Found it!!! Under 56 years of dirt and dust. Just had to use some spit. The VIN on the door panel is wrong as suggested. I need to look at my pink slip because I’m sure it is based on the door tag. Thanks everyone

That solves the serial number.

Doesn't answer the question about the axle. There may be a metal tag on the rear axle for that answwer.
