Anyone know a Terne-plate aternative?

Details such as correct colors, plating material, inspection marks, orientation, and even the number of wipes that should occur for a vacuum-powered windshield wiper system after pushing the "wash" button.

Anyone know a Terne-plate aternative?

Post by nategoff »

Hi Folks,

Does anyone know an alternative to Terne plate? I have a 56 Mark II. I'm restoring it. The gas tank is a little rusty on the outside and I want to get it to the original Terne plate look. I'll media blast the rust off. Does anyone have a method of recreating the Terne plate look? Spray on or brush on maybe?

Any thoughts or past experiences are appreciated.

Check Eastwood. They have a product called Tank Tone.

Thanks, I'll order a can of that and do a test. My concern is it will look too shiny tho. would the original finish have been duller? I'm thinking with tin and lead maybe so. I wasn't around to see any new ones back then. lol.

Tank Tone has a dull silver metallic finish. The color is about right but it does not replicate the grainy look of the original galavanized ? metal.
