Where are people getting new Michelins with WWs?
Update: Go to the end of the thread and read backwards for the latest info. Many tires mentioned are no longer available - Admin
Just got my May - June 2009 Lincoln and Continental Comments in the mail today. In the back classified section, under "Modern Marks", two cars are advertised with "New Michelins".
I have been trying to locate Michelin tires with white walls to fit my '77, but I'm continually told that none are made.
Where are people finding "New Michelin's" to fit on '70s Mark III's and Mark V's with white walls?
Also, reading about "The Journey of C5601627", a reference was made to "...applied the battery overlays available from Jack Rosen." I did not know that one could dress up a modern battery to "look like and original". How do they work?
I called Mark II Enterprises and they only deal with a unit for the mid '50's Mark II.
Are there "battery overlays" for my '77 Continental?
Thanks
Mike

Re: Where are people getting new Michelin's with WW's?
New Michelins means they have little mileage, not that they were just bought new.
I'll sell you my never-used spare for $150. With the rim!
I want to buy a new tire and restore another aluminum turbine rim.
I can't even buy a new Firestone 721 with the 1.6" whitewalls anymore either. I bought two back in Nov 2002 and heard they stopped selling them in early 2003.
As far as I know, they do not make Michelins with WWs anymore.

Re: Where are people getting new Michelin's with WW's?
Personally I think the Michelins are highly overrated. On my two Mark V's when they needed tires, I immediately got rid of the Michelins. I put Goodyear Regattas on. The cars handled better, had less wheel spin in the rain and snow, and sqealed less turning corners. Of course my Mark V's were daily drivers at the time. Unfortunately my current Mark IV has Michelins. I'd love to get rid of them, but they are like new. Unfortunately I don't think they make the Goodyear Regatta WW anymore.

Jack makes the battery overlay only for the Mark II. The correct battery size for the car is 32N which is only available with the "Ford Power Punch" script. The Mark II had a battery script unique to the car as you can see in the picture.
Before the overlay became available, I hand painted the star on freehand with yellow enamel. (correct caps for the Mark II are also yellow) Now, with the overlay, I glue it on with weatherstrip adhesive and if I need a new battery, I remove the overlay with a paint scraper and install it on the replacement.
Batteries for the 70's Marks were just Motorcrafts. My '76 Mark IV takes a Motorcraft 27F. I'm sure your '77 takes the same size.

I don't even know what a 77 Town Car Battery is supposed to look like.

Here are the pictures of the one in my Mark IV. It's a 24F, not 27.

Re: Where are people getting new Michelin's with WW's?
Dan, Nick
Thanks for the info. Now I know what battery overlays are all about. I have a modern Motorcraft in the '77 right now, I just assumed that in '77 they still had filler caps, etc....
I'll just keep using the tires I have for now and keep asking my local tire guy once a year if anybody will start making a modern radial tire that will fit the '70s Lincolns and have the correct size WW.
I wonder if anybody in the trade will be at the Lancaster show; perhaps its worth a letter on LCOC letterhead to a tire manufacturer (or Coker folks)?
Thoughts?
Thanks
Mike
PS: was finally able to fix this http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2075717/4

Re: Where are people getting new Michelin's with WW's?
When I resurrected my Mark IV last year, I needed to replace the original Michelins. Like others have stated, I couldn't find any new Michelins with WW. But I was able to find new Firestones with WW, and I think the WW itself is very close to the correct size. It certainly looks good. It was either those or Yokohamas, so I decided to at least go with the contemporary American brand if I couldn't have true OEM.navguy12 wrote: I'll just keep using the tires I have for now and keep asking my local tire guy once a year if anybody will start making a modern radial tire that will fit the '70s Lincolns and have the correct size WW.
The tires I think were the FR380, about $75 ea. They seem to ride and handle well and I've had no complaints or issues with them. You might have to look under "truck" tires for that size nowadays.

Were Goodyears used in 1977? Are Goodyears available with WWs?
Update: After visiting their site, they don't even make blackwalls for a 235/75-R15!

Re: Where are people getting new Michelin's with WW's?
I bought the Goodyears probably sometime around 2003. I don't think they make them anymore. Too bad, they looked good and performed well. They actually are now on another car. When these Michelins need to be replaced I think I will just check what Coker has or look into a place that specializes in wide whites for antiques and see if they have anything narrower.

Re: Where are people getting new Michelin's with WW's?
I found replacements for the 1.6" whitewalls I have on my 77:
Update: Link updated 26Aug2013.
They are not correct, but a lot of people like them and so do I. The price is reasonable, too. Check out Universal Tire.Com
They do not have any 3/4" WW tires, though (not in 235/75-R15 anyway.

I found this link....
https://www.tiresavings.com/tireShop.ph ... on=Regular
...for the Firestone WW in 235/75R-15 with your info ($US 62.00). I'll add this link to my growing list of "where to go" when I need to replace what I have on the car now..
Much thanks

Re: Where are people getting new Michelin's with WW's?
I still recommend the Yokohama Avid Touring tires for these cars. Except for a bit of tire noise when you're near a divider on a highway and your foot is off the gas, I have no complaints. I used 235/70-15 on my Mark V. I felt the size was a good compromise between getting the width of a 235, and having the height closer to a 225/75. Very pleased. I had Goodyear Regatta 2's on a '79 Riviera, and they were pretty good. Apples and oranges between the two cars, but I didn't get the impression those tires were overall as good as the Yokohama's. I can't tell you about wet performance of the tires - I only got caught in the rain once with them, but they didn't call attention to themselves in it.
The Yokohama's look like this (I use this picture of the car a lot, sorry!) :

Yokohamas on a Lincoln? Go with the Firestones!
Firestone FR380s are the only Firestone's in 235/75-R15s with WWs.
