It only just occurred to me lately thata the '88 TC that I bought around last Halloween has one wheel lug that requires a "key" to unscrew..... and the car did not come with the needed 'key'.
Do many garages have the ability to take these off without said 'key'? I plan to remove them and replace with normal wheel lug nuts. Who wants to not be able to take a tire & wheel assembly off a car when you get a flat and you have no 'key': the means to remove said "anti-theft" device?
These anti-theft things may have helped long ago.... but now they're just a nuisance, IMO.
How do garages take off the wheel lock without a 'key'?

My guess is every shop has a kit with all the keys. It's the same kit the crooks build as they steal more and more wheels.

Take your car to a local locksnith and get a key made for the wheels.

The key is usually in the glove box or the trunk. Most people never bother to even look for it. There's no reason to remove it from the car.

My Key is attached to the spare tire lug nut wrench via a small wire clip.Dan Szwarc wrote:The key is usually in the glove box or the trunk. Most people never bother to even look for it. There's no reason to remove it from the car.

Two options;
Call McGard wheel locks at
Customer Service for Automotive and Marine Products Ph: 800-444-5847 (US and Canada). They were able to get me a key for a lock on the wheel covers on a Cadillac.
Or try a impact driver the ones that you hit with a hammer use the flat screw driver bit and wedge it in the slot. My Dad used one to remove a set years ago.
