Water Pump Shaft Packing

Post by Stuart M. Cohen »

The Packard has some drips and I need to have my mechanic re pack the water pump shaft. I was looking and it looks like the stuff is only sold in (what I'd call) quantity. Anyone with a mid 20s to mid 30s car happen to have some? I know the stuff isn't expensive, but figured I'd check here.

Graphite water pump packing is sold by the pound. It also comes in many sizes and shapes. Rectangle is the most common shape.
What size do you need ?

I was told 1/8 or 3/16 diameter round is the right size.
