Help identifying dad's car from 1980, 81

Post by 77MarkV »

Here I have included a picture of dad's car taken sometime around 80,81. I know it's from the Ford line but I can't remember what it was. Cougar, Thunderbird? I was probably about 5 years old so forget remembering anything about a car that long ago. I'd sure like to get one myself. :D

Ok I'll jump in. Did a quick look see on wikipedia at T birds and Cougars mid to late 70s. Your picture shows wrap around tail lights and side marker lights in yellow above the trim. Looks like it is a third generation 1974 - 1976 Cougar. The Tbird did not have wrap around tail lights and the Tbird side marker lights are below the trim. Also it looks like the Tbird used the chrome style mirrors but your picture shows the color matched sport mirrors as on the Cougar xr-7. That's my opinion but i'm not an expert. Any one else.

Torino may be it. Had another look on wikipedia.
I noticed after my initial reply that the opera window in his picture is pointed to the rear with a full vinyl roof which looks more like the Torino. The cougar had a rectangular opera window and a half vinyl roof.

A base Mercury Cougar. 1977 to 1979
White with a Chamois vinyl top??

If it was a XR7 there would be louvers at the front edge of the opera window

My guess would be that it is a 1974-1976 Mercury Montego. The size/shape of the rear quarter window points to Montego over the otherwise similar looking Mercury Cougar or Ford Elite of that time.

Yeah I bet it is a Montego. Is that a name badge just ahead of the doors? Did Montego have that?

Nearly all FLM models of that era have an emblem on the front fenders behind the wheel well.

I think mid 70s Montego but a base model. Here's a pic of a 75 Montego MX Brougham.

You don't really see a lot of the Montego, Elites, Torinos, later Cougars, etc. from that era. I kind of think they rusted into oblivion or are not of much interest to collectors.

I Suspect that they were also family cars, loaded with kids and sticky popsicles, ground in hamburgers and fries, and that the trunks and roofs probably brought a lot of stuff from the hardware store that should have been put on a truck. They just got used up...Wayne

Yeah I believe it. There's none to be found around me. Cash for clunkers didn't help matters either. Many old cars were crushed for a few buck. Sickens me.

I’m going with Montego because of the front end. From the rear it’s almost impossible from that angle because the Torino, Cougar and Montego all used the same rear end
