Got a slightly automotive project for the garage.

Post by Dan Szwarc »

I just picked this up.

It's a 1965 design for Mobil Oil stations. This one is from Pennsylvania and built in March, 1969.

I'm restoring it the way I restore a car, except maybe not powdercoat everything.

I'll share the ultimate project plans soon. I'm having fun learning about it right now.

Dan, I remember those. Mobil was going with the futuristic "round" look in the pumps, the lights and the building. Cool period piece.

Now you just need a 500 gallon tank buried in your yard and you can fuel up that Lincoln and Mercury conveniently.

I remember those! They were the most modern-looking and futuristic gas pumps for quite some times. I remember even better the prices of the high-octane gas dispensed from pumps such as this one - 33.9 cents per gallon! And let's not forget the so-called gas wars, which included trading stamps at 10 times the amount of your gas purchase. Oh, the memories!

I have the reset mechanism working and have managed to ring up 90 something gallons on it. I have to figure out the pricing a little, then I'll start restoration and body work. Uh... I mean panel work. One side is dented a little, but should pound out. II think I'm going to do some powdercoating of the small stuff and just blast and repaint the insides.

Working on this thing is like working on a 60s Lincoln!

Stu is from Jersey. They don't pump their own gas in that state. Plus, these were only at Mobil stations.
