sanding and polishing paint. what a job!!!!!

Post by Jcarnes »

Started sanding and polishing the paint on my 68 LC. The car was painted may of this year and it looked great but wanted that extra wow factor so a buddy and I started last mon we started with 1000 grit wet then 1200 then 2000 all by hand then finished off with 3ms 3000 Trisac then lots of buffing. Lots of work but wow paint is like a perfect mirror. My buddy has some serious talent with paint im the mechanic. We help each other out on our projects nice to harder!!! Here's trunk after 1000 grit then finished.

Wow!! I've tried some compound with a wool disc on my variable speed machine, but havent had any luck. I was thinking I would go ahead and try some 1200 or 1600 in a small area and see what I get. Looks like you're heading in the right direction. Whoever painted my 68 LC in its previous life didnt do any color sanding or finishing and stopped short. Its a shame because they did a really great job otherwise. It think the paint will look something close to your if I can compound it properly.

See, I just don't have the nerve for that. My luck I'll burn through the clear, and have to re-do the whole panel.

Try a paint polish instead of rubbing compound. I have had good luck with Turtle Wax paint polish, but I have heard that Mcguires is better.
