Can you glean a build date from a serial number?
'56 Mark II convertible, '51 Royal Spartanette, '56 Chris Craft Continental
'68 Lincoln Continental Limo, '77 Town Car, '55 356 Porsche Continental cabrio,
'69 Mark III convertible,'88 BMW 750iL, '88 BMW 325iX, '97 BMW Z-3, '98 ML-320

My newest car is 15 years old!

Probably. But I would need the VINs of the above vehicles. I know mine, I can get yours, and maybe get Mike's.

I'd prefer to have actual schedule dates from vehicles. For all we know, the plant stopped production for a week or two just to change the speedo (like waiting for parts).

This kind of detail is way crazier than the LCOC gets. If I ever swap out the speedo for a 120mph from my parts car, the data will be messed up for anyone who tries to figure this out after I am dead and gone.

Who would be crazy enough to take a TC over 85 mph? On a trip back from the west side of the state a stiff wind made me move over a full lane. That was a crazy thing at 70, I couldn't imagine taking mine above 85. Now, my other cars are another question.

I wonder if I should start a high-speed Lincoln thread?

I've had my '66 to 90 and my '70 Merc to 100. :D Not for very long. Gets too loud.

The way I drive, I should probably install a speedo that only goes to 65. :D

I've had my Mark II to 90, but my speedo only registered 80, so I was real surprised by the radar readout.

The cop wasn't!

My unerstanding is the speedos really lose accuracy (and read faster than you are actually going) the more you are going over 70mph.

A GPS will give you accurate speed.

chiming in too..mine at 95 was actually smoother than i expected, and very connected to the road. It felt safe. The noise from the masses of air im pushing aside is another story...

still, the cars can do it, but its more fun to cruise silently down the highway

Heres a photo of the km speedo in my project car, a '70 Continental Coupé:

Image

As you can just about see, its marked up to 200 in km's only. Is that rare, unusual, or neither?

I think all metric speedos on 60s and 70s Lincolns are fairly uncommon only because they did not export too many of them to Europe in that time. Canadian cars were not metric until 1977.

i would say that is really rare...i didnt even know they had a seprate speedo..i know some cars had double markings on them..but those were 77s for Canada..i think...

I'll try to take a better picture of it the next time I get a chance to work on the car... as well as have a look in the MPC to see if its listed.

Build date of November 10, 1976
John's Information is consistent with what has been found thus far.

Uncle Joe, how's that '70 Coupe coming along? IMHO, one of the prettiest and most under appreciated cars of all time!

Any pictures you might share with the class????

Its coming along very slowly at present due to ill health, which is the reason I've not been online much as well. Hopefully, in a few weeks, that will change. Theres nothing like restoring a car to help someone along the way to recovery!
