Parts list for changing cam gear and chain [UPDATE]

Post by burnski »

I have a 64 with A.C.. I'm planning to change my timing gear and chain this winter so in starting to round up the parts I need. Here is my parts list so far. I figure if I have the front end apart I might as well do everything. Can someone check that I have the right parts and that i'm not missing anything:

cam timing gear CLOYES S386T: http://goo.gl/KZ2yiT
timing chain: CLOYES C493: http://goo.gl/yDK7wX
Crank timing gear: CLOYES S283: http://goo.gl/aIJjsR
Timing cover gasket set: http://goo.gl/1uPRxS
180* Thermostat: http://goo.gl/N0UEGb
Thermostat gasket: http://goo.gl/hTLspP
7/8" bypass hose: http://goo.gl/sjtbCg
power steering rebuild kit: http://goo.gl/49yQQm

Do I need to replace the water diverters or is this just the kinda thing that you only do if they are bad? MarkII also has them: http://goo.gl/Y3PdiV

My waterpump is not leaking so im just planning to leave it alone.

Thanks.

Doing some more digging, I need water pump gaskets, there a 7/8" piece of hose... Should I be rebuilding my water pump while it's apart?

I can find the timing gasket - is it just rtv?

What other gaskets / hoses?

Should probably replace the thermostat too eh?

If you are in the USA, I can send you the 7/8" hose pre-cut to length for $10.

Timing gasket is available. It won't come with the timing gears.
Water Pump gaskets are available.

Water pump CAN be rebuilt while out, but if it wasn't leaking, it's probably better to avoid the hassle of a rebuild and just clean it up and reinstall it. Pump kits are $65 from Cowboy John.

Thanks Dan. I'm Canadian (not far from you though) but I'll find a way to get the hose from you.

Any idea where to find the timing cover gasket set? I'm not having any luck.

I'll check out cowboy John for the rebuild kit.

Does a 52 tooth cam gear sounds right for a 64 430? Also lists a 40 tooth.

Inspect the water water diverters for holes. If they are OK and seem solid, they should be OK.

A few members here have fabricated their own. I can't find the relevant thread because I can't remember the key words.

Great post and thanks for the part numbers. So I highly recommend buying from Advanced Auto Parts. Here is how I purchased the cam timing gear, crank timing gear and timing chaining for ~$80 USD.

www.advanceautoparts.com - add the items to your cart and then visit RetailMeNot.com. Obtain a discount code and use that during checkout. Advance Auto Parts ships to your home for free. I normally use a 30% off code for Advance Auto Parts from Retail Me Not but one was not active at the time.. so I used a 25% off code. But right now there is, in fact, a 30% off code active on Retail Me Not for Advance Auto Parts. I had the parts in my car and decide to check out the next day and lost the additional 5% lol.

Anyway, thanks again for the research on the part numbers. I was surprised to see these parts readily available from Advanced. My order came to $81.68 for all 3 pieces. Much cheaper than I anticipated paying via one of the usual companies I frequently buy from.
