I need a windshield for my 1961 vert. Found an original carlite for sale. The windshield has some small defects on the bottom edge. Looks like some chips just on the edge. Rest of windshield is good. It is a good price.
Questions
1. Is my assumption correct that an original will fit better than a reproduction?
2. Are the chips a reason to pass on it?
Chips on bottom edge of windshield okay?

Re: Chips on bottom edge of windshield okay?
#1 Not necessarily. Broad brushing the result without knowing more may pass up solutions
#2 May be. It depends on chip. A chip may develop into a crack or water may get into a crack and cause damage. Or nothing may happen at all.
Other considerations:
The CARLITE logo will not be on a reproduction if that is a consideration. While the logo can be reproduced, having some brand X that is laminated into the glass would be a dissappointment if looking for originality
The windshield glass provides some structural mass to the vehicle. As such if the glass is not installed correctly and securely, the glass can move. The chips can be an issue for the movement. In addition there is some flex that occurs in the glass. The flex is different in a topless ride. How different I do not know. I have experience with full sized vans and they do flex more than I was aware of.
Then there is tinted and shaded glass versus not

Chips on the edges can easily turn into cracks.
I'd pass.
