1966 LCC resto-mod conversion

Post by twistngo »

So here’s the project, I have always wanted a 66-67 convertible since I saw my first one when I was 10 years old. However I love the options, features, and reliability of modern fuel injected computer controlled cars. So I have decided to combine the best of both worlds, 2000 Town Car drive train, wiring, suspension etc. grafted into the hacked up 66 vert I bought out of Alabama. Lincoln purist feel free to be disgusted. The car looks good in the pic but has a $5 paint job with runs, sags, over spray and missed spots and the electrical looked like a blind Amish person worked on it. The only things that worked were headlights, RR window, temp gauge and speedo. The engine and tranny work fine but it would only run about 20 minutes and would die and have to sit for several hours before it would restart, vapor lock?. Interior trashed, holes cut for speakers, dash cut to mount gauges, knobs missing, and a hole punched through the firewall and the ATC control box with a screw driver to run the add on gauge wiring. The car was a basket case, restorable, yes. However, I did not want to spend $40K to restore it to original 60’s technology. So after getting the 66 home I found a wrecked 2000 Town Car and gutted it for all its useable parts. This gave me everything but a suspension which came from an 06 Crown Victoria police car, front frame clip, complete cross-member (see drdvldog’s posts also) and rear end. I used the 06 rear end so the anti-lock pulsar rings are the same front to back, yes it will have ABS and airbags when complete.

I will be selling all the old patrs from this car so if you need something let me know, parts currently removed, complete rear end drum to drum, front suspension, gas tank, engine transmision, dash, 8 track radio ATC unit etc.

At work right now will post pics of progress when I get home, can anyone clue me in as to how to post my pics to this topic I would appreciate it.

At the far right of the picture you'll see a box titled "Links". In that box there is another box that is titled "IMG Code". After clicking on that box, you'll see a brief message appear that says "copied". Once that is done, you simply right click your mouse in your message body to automatically paste that code.

Nice looking car, by the way.

From one purist to a customizer, I'd like to say 'welcome to the forum' twistngo. Very curious to see and read how your '66 project will evolve.

Cheers,

Hey twistngo,

Welcome. Although I'm not one for customizations, I am interested to see how you end up with this project. Looks like it will be pretty neat. You will definitely have a lot of custom metal work to do. I will PM you about original parts from the '66.

Thanks for the help and posting the pic I will work on get the other 30 some pics posted. The car is very photogenic in that pic, however, if you look there is no chrome on the car and all and I mean all the rubber is gone. Who ever painted it took it all off and never gave it back to the owner. All the holes for mounting the chrome are filled, but not very well. As for the rubber looks like $2k to the Usual Suspects. Other parts that are available from the car the steering colume, steering box, ac evaporator, the complete air box with ducts ac condenser and heater core, and the 22" wheels and tires in the pic.

Nothing left of the Town Car it went to the scrap yard shortly after that pic minus the wheels. Still got $230 for it wow. If you look close you can see that the whole firewall is gone, you can see the seat through the hole. Sold the wheels and I am using the dash in the 66. A little wide but nothing a little creative hammering and cutting could not fix. I have all the mods to the fire wall mostly done, still have to put in the mount for the modern steering colume and one more harness plug. Things have been going pretty smooth considering, I think converting to and electric wiper motor may be one of my greater challenges. Have pics that I will post in the morning, work has the internet locked down, now that I know how to do it.

Awesome post so far!! I dig it. I like how you solved the fuel tank issue. I am working on modding the stock tank for the Cobra pumps and set up in order to run a return style fuel system for future HP upgrades.

I am looking forward to getting mine done by the summer...what do you think the timeline is for your beauty??
