Still available by special order at most auto-parts stores if you know the manufacturer and part number.
Comments:
The aftermarket filters are actually filters for an air-brake compressor and are not intended to be used as a fluid filter in power steering/transmission fluid. However, they seem to be an acceptable substitute. These are the filters sold by typical Lincoln parts sellers. Because the filter is not an exact replacement, one must carefully install the filter slightly offset inside the reservoir so as not to block the orifices.
Other Applications:
'60 to 64 Mercury with 383[/color]

The P/S filter for the '65 and '66 Lincoln is ford part # PB8M-3837-A. Same as pre-65 Lincolns.
In 1965 and later full sized Ford and Merc the vendor for P/S pumps was changed away from the old Eaton design and that new style pump did not require a filter. 1964 Full sized Fords had that same filter as the full sized Mercurys. The Eaton designed pump was used with all engine sizes.
Some 1965 Comets required a P/S filter. This year also used the Eaton designed pump. The Ford part # is B7A-3837-A. In midproduction the 1965 and all of the 1966 Comets had the newer P/S pump design same as all full sized Mercurys for 1965 and later.

Can anyone confirm the same filter is used on '67 and '68s?

As the 65/69 CONT and 68/69 MARK (430,462 and later 460) used the EATON crank driven P/S pump, the same basic remote reservoir was retained and all used the PB8M 3837-A filter.Dan Szwarc wrote:

B7A 33538 (the first character 3 in the Basic PN is an expansion character so that explains the extra character) was the filter used with the EATON pump with attached reservoir.
65/72 LINC-MERC MPC
3837 ELEMENT (POWER STEERING PUMP OIL RESERVOIR FILTER)
PB8M 3837-A 65/69 D (CONT) (and) K (MARK)
(PB8M Is I Believe A 1958 Number-FORD used different systems until they began to consolidate number systems about 1959)

Dan,
I went to the FRAM cross-reference website and entered the NAPA 2714 number (see http://www.power-21.com/HoneywellPower2 ... 14&em=True) and came up with several of the missing numbers, added below. There are at least a dozen other makes listed at this website, many of which I never have seen on Auto stores shelves. Also note, I have not actually tried fitting any of these in.
Application:
60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66 with crank-mounted power steering pumps.
Original Ford PN: PB8M-3837-A
Other Ford PNs: ---- MOTORCRAFT FA291 or FA291-FP
Commonly used replacements:(These are air filters used in place of the original Ford filter. They are close enough to use, but were not originally intended to be used as a fluid filter)

Re: Cross Reference: Power Steering Filter
I updated the pics and info in the first post with your additions.
I noticed you have a couple entires with two part numbers: Wix: 42714 or 24553
Does that mean that BOTH area acceptable or you were not able to confirm which?

Dan,
In the cases where there are two numbers listed, this is because the FRAM site listed both as options that were similar to their FRAM part.

Re: Cross Reference: Power Steering Filter
The Wix website says the 24553 is obsolete. Only 42714 is currently available.
I will leave it on the list for historical purposes (like most of them).

Re: Cross Reference: Power Steering Filter
You probably don't need a filter at all. You should have no reason to change the fluid since it is essentially sealed.blue68 wrote:DAN, would it hurt the power steering to not run a filter and say change the fluid more often?
Just use a filter. They are only about $6-8.
