63 Continental mystery part

Post by cadtbird »

In my ongoing restoration, I can't seem to figure out where this goes. I think it is somewhere under the car. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I asked the same question on my 66 and mine was in much poorer condition. (Coated)

It is the alternator splash shield

Post a pic after you install it. It’s only three bolts.

It’s usually lost or thrown away by service techs when the alternator is repaired. Feel lucky you have one.

I recently replaced my burnt alt and my splash shield was still there. It came off way easier than back on. I assume this is why most of them got tossed by the wayside, as the average customer would never even know it was present in the 1st place. It took some finagling to get it back in place correctly to line up the bolt holes.

To remove them, everything needs to be positioned and aligned (including the stars). Reinserting is equally frustrating if you don't remember how it came out.

I had equal frustration with the shield that went behind the auto-dimmer's electric eye: Got if off easily, couldn't figure how to put it back on. I should've thought about snapping pictures for reference. I took it off to straighten out the fender after the first collision I faced with Frankenstein and just kept it off until I could figure how it went back on. I don't have that shield anymore; it's another of "those" things that got cremated in that infamous shed fire. I'll have to hope I come across another one...along, maybe, with a stray alternator shield.
