Brake rotor recommendations ('70)

Post by denizen44 »

With these new solid wheels, front brakes get immensely hot.
I want to lessen the heat buildup: is it worth getting slotted/drilled rotors?
Has anyone tried them?

Welp, I finally decided to go ahead and give those 'high performance rotors' a try....

Package came in today, woot.

Image

All I can say is: WOW.

Image
Image

My old rotors were still decent but below 1", whereas these new ones got plenty of thickness to go!

Image

I love the fact that they are painted where they would usually rust! :banana-dance:

Image
Image

Drilled and slotted!

Image

New races!! Yayz.

Shouldn't have too much trouble installing these, most likely keeping my current 2 year-old bearings.

Image

Made by StopTech.

Image

These are asymmetrical and can't be swapped. I think the color difference is on purpose.

Image

27 pounds each. Package was heavy as HELL!

Image

More to come when I install them! :D

I hope they work, but I was going to comment that slotted and drilled rotors are a waste of money for a street car. I hope that they work out for you. They sure look nice.

What data do you have that says they are heating up a lot? Having trouble with brake fade?

Yeah well I thought so too, but they were a reasonable 75 each. 8)

No fade, but I was getting sizzling hot wheels after a city ride, something that did NOT happen with the previous set of wheels.

I am positive these will stay cooler.

Did some brake work today :D

First, safely jack the car, then unscrew lug nuts.
Image

Set aside...
Image

Old rotors. They still had a few more years I'm sure...
Image

Detach caliper... Set behind, make sure not to stress the brake line...
Image

Remove dust cap, cotter pin...
Image

Remove nutlocker and center nut, then pull rotor out, revealing a greasy spindle.
Image

Take out outer bearing...
Image

Rear side of rotor, where the old wheel seal is visible in front of the greasy inner bearing.
Image

I'll be keeping those bearings, they are young and in great shape.
Image

This works well to clean up the parts. Spray, wipe, rinse, repeat.
Image

Done cleaning.
Image

I managed to save these two old seals!
(Wink to kev! )
Image

But I used new ones anyway.
Image

Testing, this is where they will sit.
Image

Grease it up, pack it full!
Image

Grease up the race generously, then set bearing in place.
Image

I used this raw steel cylinder to make sure I hammered the seal "flatly" underneath.
Image

Done. Surprizingly hard to force in.
Image

Cleaned the Spindle...
Image

Gently push rotor in... It's also packed with grease.
Image

Grease up the race, insert outer bearing, then washer.
Image

Center nut, snug but not too tight of course.
Then the nut locker and cotter pin...
Image

Now for the new brake pads...
Image

Nice and snug.
(Normally this goes in before the rotor. )
Image

Re-install outer pad and brake hardware...
Image

Expectedly, with all this new hardware, the caliper's piston had to be pushed in completely.
Image

Despite the previous operation, it's still a very tight fit.
One also has to be careful not to pinch the piston's rubber lip against the pad.
Image

Tight fit but the rotor spins freely! 8)
Image

Now for the left side's outer bearing...
Image

Washer
Image

Nut, nutlock and cotter pin
Image

Spins freely, all done! :D :D
Image

Sexay! 8-)
Image

Back on its wheels!
Image

Test drive tomorrow.

I'm confident, everything went flawlessly! :smt033

Id give yourself plenty of stopping distance...I have slotted and vented on my Crown Vic and they dont do much performance wise, but the ones I got are US made and with the 5 spoke rims they look pretty. On a steel rim you cant see em...

But they may feel better because theyre new lol... My 73 could use some new breaks, anything would be better than the potatoes I have as brakes!

Tested the new brakes today, the stopping performance is honestly just phenomenal.... Did StopTech make the rotors you use?

True.. But my hope is/was that the front brakes and wheels don't become sizzling hot as before.
