Electric Power Steering (And eliminating the crank PS Pump)
I though I would share my solution to my power steering problem after having my power steering pump fail. Being on the other side of the world and having a weak Australian dollar the cost of a rebuild made me look for an alternative. So I installed an electric power steering pump out of a modern car and it is working fine.
I have one question in regards to the timing cover has anybody modified one to seal the crank shaft where the power steering pump is located at the moment I have left the old pump in place with the internals removed and filled it with oil. But would like to come up with a better solution.

Re: Electric Power Steering
If you want to seal up the timing cover, you need to gut the PS pump so you can use the back of it as a plate and the collar inside as a spacer to properly align the harmonic balancer. Otherwise, you have to custom machine the equivalent of both to serve the same purpose.
But I want more information about your electric PS setup. Everyone does.

Yes. More details and photos of the electric power steering! Does it also have enough fluid and power for the wiper motor?

You can get the timing cover & harmonic balancer space from a 59-60 thunderbird. They used the same MEL 430 but used an external belt driven power steering pump.

Re: Electric Power Steering
Nice solution Pat. Thanks for sharing. I have often thought about options for PS that didn't require so much disassembly to maintain or service. The electric option sounds interesting as it doesn't add the complexity of mounting another belt, tensioner and pump all requiring fairly tight tolerances for alignment with the crank. The OP looks like he has it mounted in the wheel well. I would like to know more about how you installed it and what make/model of car the pump came from and/or the specs of the pump's output. Oh, and also as was already asked, does it take care of your wipers?

Electric PS, waterless cooling, and Hydroboost PB are all fascinating topics I'd love tosee discussed. How cool to entertain the possibility of new technologies to make these cars more reliable. I will be awaiting new info!

This is now a sticky!
Thanks for posting this, Pat. I knew that T-birds did not use the crank PS pump, but did not know their timing cover would fit (suspected).

Re: Electric Power Steering
I have not hooked up the wiper motor I wanted to make sure it would at least drive the steering gear box but now I have it running I think it would have enough grunt to drive them both.defrang wrote:Yes. I have reinstalled the old pump with the internals removed.
The pump is a TRW PA66 out of a Holden Astra I think there called Opel's in the Uk but are not available in the States.
I was happy with the installation especially that it is hidden inside the front guard and the wheel well cover still fits.
Can videos be posted here as I have a video of it operating?

Re: Electric Power Steering
Rumor has it that Lincoln land has some of these parts. Otherwise it'll be junk yards. Can also check the buy/sell on squarebirds.orgadyhamer wrote:Pat thanks for the info do you know where I could source one of those timing covers?burnski wrote:You can get the timing cover & harmonic balancer space from a 59-60 thunderbird. Also check out the mercury forums. The 58-60 mercury had the 430 as an option and power steering wasn't standard in those cars so some well have this alternate timing cover
