Brake Metering Valve on '65 Continental

Post by richgee »

Our '65 is leaking brake fluid from the bottom of the metering valve. There's a part on the bottom of this piece that resembles a zerk fitting and appears to be 'falling out'. It spins freely with fingers but won't come out or stay in. Any help to repair or replace is appreciated. Thanks, Rich.

I removed the metering valve on my 65 about 10 years ago. As I recall, the unit has a vent on the bottom that has a loose plug thingy. Mine was leaking, I removed it, disassembled it and ended up backing up the existing piston seal with a "O" ring, hand selecting one from a local auto parts store. Cost less than a dollar to repair and has been fine since. However, if you prefer to buy a rebuilt unit, I recall Bakers has them.

The pin on the bottom of the metering valve is actually a release for bleeding the brakes. You have to push it in and hold it to properly bleed the front disc brakes.

It should never leak, although I guess it could rattle.

Does everyone know what the metering valve does?
