Hollandaises' 1969 Sedan

Post by hollandaises »

Hi all,

Here is my newly acquired 1969 Continental sedan in light green. I purchased the car in Edmonton, Alberta. The car has been in Alberta since 1985 and is rust free except for some rot in the dogleg by the rear passenger's door. There is also minor rust on both rear quarters along the bottoms, but it is not advanced. The floors and structure look perfect. The 1961-69 Lincoln models have always been one of my top favorites, and after downsizing my collection I wanted something more refined than my previous collection of mostly 1950s and earlier cars. I had initially intended to drive the car home, but due to weather I opted to trailer it back to Calgary.

It's been in heated storage for the past ten years and as such will need a major tuneup and attention to the brakes, tires, and fluids, but it appears to not have suffered much from its inactivity. Everything is working except for the air conditioning, which does not have a belt hooked up. The climate control seems to want to respond, so hopefully the ATC should be functional. Unfortunately it got a slight dent on the front passengers door during unloading, but the paint appears unharmed. The only dent on the entire car! I'm still kicking myself over it. It should be easy to press it out.

The first step will be an overhaul of the entire brake system, followed by replacing the 30 year old tires. I'm sure glad I didn't drive it home! There is also a definite rattle from the timing chain upon startup, so that will need to be replaced with a new all-steel set before cruising, at that point I may as well reseal the power steering pump and water pump as a preventive measure. Everything else appears to be healthy. The engine idles smoothly without a valvetrain or lower end knocks. There's also a major lack of low end power. The engine doesn't seem to want to go without a good amount of throttle, but it feels like a tuning issue as the transmission seems to engage strongly. To be expected after sitting so long. With the snow coming I may be unable to confirm until spring. I'll also rebuild the fuel pump, alternator, ingition, and all vacuum lines and hoses to ensure dependability.

What a find! 69’s with Town Car interior package are the cream of the crop! You have a really special car. Good luck getting her back up to snuff. Be sure to post details and more photos!

Looking at the photos again, realize the door panel isn’t Town Car package, but seats are. Perplexing indeed. The trim code on the driver door placard will say for sure what the car was originally.

Congratulations on your purchase, sure looks to be a great example to restore. I always really liked that colour. Also good idea to have trailered it home. Looking forward to photo updates. Thank goodness for that small group Lincoln owners who placed their cars into storage rather than letting them rot somewhere in a field or empty lot.

Is this the plate you are referring to?

That's the one. It will be interpreted in the maintenance manual. Wayne

BG is the optional leather/vinyl trim option in the half diamond pattern, so the door cards match that. Someone must have acquired Town Car seats and swapped them in. They look to be in really nice condition.

I suppose if the assembly line build sheet was still in the seat bottoms that might tell some more story.

The seats photograph better than they really are, but they are still in really good condition. I do need new door ashtray assemblies as two of mine have broken springs or damaged hinges.

Today while attempting to change the battery I had a lot of sparks. The positive cable insulation had been pinched under the clamp where it runs to the alternator and it was shorting out everywhere. I'm not sure why it wasn't having issues during unloading. So the car is out of commission until I can get new cables.

A suggestion -
The factory built the vehicle with 4 gauge cables. In good condition they are just sufficient on a hot engine during a restart.

I have upgraded to 2 gauge cables in the correct color (Black or red) as part of a solution to slow engine cranking speeds after a heat soaked restart. The 460 has some issues under that situation. And there was a variety of "fixes" to address that concern. The 2 gauge cables can be found with battery terminal ends and lugs on the other end in any length you want. The 2 gauge is a little thicker and is a bit difficult to bend easily but gets the job done.

The Lincoln is up and running again with new 1 gauge cables. I also installed a new alternator and electronic voltage regulator. The brakes had all rubber seals and hoses replaced, and all wear items in the ingition were replaced. I also found the previous mechanic had not tightened the differential filler plug and the diff was almost dry. Luckily it seems to have been caught in time.

I used a motive hand pump pressure bleeder with the adapter for American style rectangular metal reservoirs. Its really the most effect way to bleed brakes and makes it easy to pass a high volume of fluid through the system, which I feel is especially important on old cars that have a lot of crud in the lines.

It turns out the ball joints and control arm bushes had already been done and are in fine shape, so I only have to replace the leaf spring bushings and sway bar bushings for the time being.

Finally, I discovered a broken vacuum modulator which is on the way. I also have a audible vacuum leak in all forward gears which I hope is due to the modulator, and a small fuel leak from the carburetor sprung up due to the car sitting for so long.

You've sure done a lot of work in a hurry. Car looks good. I see you have some of that Calgary style snow on the ground. We've had our first dump here in Ontario but it melted away. Supposed to be in the fifties next week so maybe I'll get in a final round of golf. Cruising to the course with my clubs in the trunk of my '61 was always the dream. Now I actually do it. Your car is lucky it found a new owner. Rick

Next project will be new rear springs and bushings. Does anyone know if there is an interchange on these parts I can get locally?

I usually order springs from a website.

Leaf springs can be made to order based on dimension and weight of load
Coils are usually available based on application
