Maybe that's the way they came from the factory. I see restorations pretty often and they are usually painted the same as the whole car. Maybe that's an after market way of doing things. Don't really know. A white engine bay would be pretty hard to keep clean and would show dirt big time.

Sheridan, did the engine compartment come from the factory in black? That would mak my job much easier than painting i5 white. I have an auto parts store down the street that mixes paint for all the local body shops. They can even put it in aresol cans. I was thinking of having one step paint put into shaker cans and paint the engine bay that way rather than mess with a paint gun. Any comments?

Yes, it came with a black engine bay. The few I have seen in original condition have been black, but most restored versions have been painted body color.

So when I pulled the motor out, I found this steel line that had broken away from the fitting, which is on the lower drivers side of the block and is attached to a rubber line. Can someone tell me what this is for? Not sure if it had already been broken or it broke when I pulled the motor

It's a vacuum line that comes from the double action oil pump and connects to the vacuum system near the power brake canister. You also get vacuum from the intake manifold but most of it comes from the oil pump. You do need the vacuum line so save it and reattach it.

Engine and transmission were delivered to their respective builders. Now it’s time to get started stripping the engine bay. I would also like to scrape the undercoating off the bottom of the car, but I’m wondering what the best product would be to replace it

Gas or diesel fuel will soften it but it takes elbow grease to get it all off.

Use a heat gun and a flat scraper to get that undercoating off.

This is nice, but there needs to be more pictures!

Also, I'm moving it to the member projects subforum.

Thank you Dan. Not many pictures to post right now as the motor and tranny are at the rebuilder, but here is another picture of what I found when I removed the passenge4 side head. Any opinion out there whether my builder will recommend new pistons?

Were the factory pistons stepped like that? I thought they had curved cutouts to mach the valves.

Don't know about the curved cutouts but the original pistons from 1958 were changed in 59 sometime to lower the horse power and work with a 2bbl carburetor in an attempt to raise the gas mileage. Lots of complaints about the MPG from Lincoln owners. I think there was a third change too and that would have been late 59 or early60. So the pistons were definitely changed once in 59 and possibly again in 1960. So now we're talking three different pistons for three different years. How much diff there is I don't know but the 58 was the only one designed to go with a four bbl carb and had the highest horsepower at 375 I think it was. Hard to remember all the facts anymore. These are the reasons that putting a four bbl where there was a two bbl carb doesn't produce any difference in performance on the 430. It's already maxed out by the factory. My saying is "Stick with stock" for getting the best out of your Lincoln. Pete

Well I guess I should have looked up the interchange numbers for thee pistons before I posted the last information. I know I read all that somewhere but it doesn't jibe with the parts number book.
Part number C2VY6108-9A;
Lincoln '58-'62 v8-430
Mercury '58-'60 v8 430
T-bird '59-'60 v8 430
So that's the tale of the parts interchange book. Regardless of the article I read I would go with the parts book number. It's probably the most accurate. Pete

Not sure about the different pistons, but I can say that my 59 has a 4 barrel carburetor and intake. I’m pretty sure it’s all original. Speaking of carburetor, I posted this picture elsewhere on the forum, but does anyone know what this thing on my accelerator rod is? It is connected to a pull knob located at the bottom of my dash and is unmarked.

I also have a second floor switch. Is that for the radio?
