I’m now into the tedious boring work. Sand, sand, sand. Clean, clean, clean. I preparation for paint. I think I may try and paint this myself. It’s just and engine bay, right?

I did pick up some more parts from my powder coating guy. He does a great job. He’s fast and I think cheap. Only charged me $75.00 to sand blast, prime and powder coat all of these parts. Is that a good price?

That’s a good price. I’d probably charge $120-150 for it. Some places will charge $40 for a single part.

So this weekends project is dirtier than last weekend. I have just about finished prepping the engine bay for paint and the car is going out to the painter on Friday. So then I decided to start the fun task of scraping the old undercoat and nearly 60 years of gunk and grease off the car. The heat gun I bought works great, but I can tell this is going to be a long, teadious project. One question I have is, are there any recommendations on what to spray it with once I get this cleaned off? I’ve heard of some people using Rhino lining?

I was cruising 58-59 and 60 Lincolns for sale and I found a 58, all white car with an all white engine compartment and they said the paint job was original. My black 60 Premiere engine compartment was black also. Since there is such an expanse of sheet metal around the engine you should probably keep your engine compartment white. Just thought you'd like to know.

After I scraped the undercoating off, the bottom was sandblasted and painted. Not sure if any of the spray on coatings will stick if it’s not really clean.

Haven’t don’t too much to The Lincoln in the past two weeks. Car has been gone for a repaint of the engine bay and hood. Car came back and it looks great, except he painted my steering box for some reason. I guess that isn’t a disaster. I can live with it. Also got a call that the tranny is ready to pick up and the engine builder confirmed my suspicions that my motor will need new pistons.

Well, I learned that the ole girl definitely needs new pistons, but I’m having trouble finding anyone that wants to make them. My builder called Diamond and he said they blew him off. Egge has the wrong pistons as does Kanter. I got ahold of someone at Wiseco three months ago who had hands on the design, but now I can’t find find my note and the guy I talked to the other day there just wants to start from scratch. I guess I’ll call my builder and have him call in the specs. He seems resistant to do it though. I’m getting a little impatient with the process

Well, it sounds like it’s going to be about a 6-8 week wait before the pistons are made and sent to my builder. So I’m going to take this time to re-wrap my wiring harnesses and start installation of all the bits that go in the engine bay. Then I think I’ll finish removing the old undercoating and get that ready for paint or new undercoating. Expecting a delivery of parts from The Old Lincoln Parts Store tomorrow. Placed an order with Mark II Enterprises a week ago, but have not received shipping info and they have not charged my card. Called to check the status today, but got a voicemail recording. Hope they’re still in business.

Got the transmission back and I was a little disappointed with the place that had it. It was supposed to be $400.00 for a simple reseal and be completed in a week. I also asked to have the outside cleaned and painted. It came back as dirty and rusty as it was when I dropped it off, took 2 months and cost $900.00. Builder said he took it apart to put new seals in and the clutches were fried, so he did a complete rebuild. I’m a bit skeptical, but we will see. I started cleaning and painting myself.

Wel, at least you will have a fresh transmission now. Did it come black from the factory? I thought they were supposed to be natural?

Hi Nick, no it’s probably not supposed to be black, but it’s not going to be a concours car anyway. I am going to leave the extension housing unpainted

I think it looks great painted. Are you sure they never painted these originally and just left them to rust?

I am so envious of your project. I have no space for doing this, but I would love to try and learn just as you are doing.

Just curious, since you are taking the engine out of the car yourself, how much are you saving over having a shop remove it? And how much is the shop charging for the rebuild of the engine after you dropped it off and are paying for the new pistons?
