I cant wait to see how it comes out. The quarter on the parts car does look nice, maybe it is in fact nice under too.

....what he says.....ouch. that looks uhm.. healthy lol
I never did have to deal with that on mine, however my recollection is that that is the procedure one would have to follow.Has anyone had any luck successfully removing the chrome trim from the tail light? The pins holding them together are heated and smushed together. I was thinking grinding them flat and drilling and tapping for some screws.
Cheers

Yes Mike that's what I figured although I'm not even close to getting the chrome re-done yet LOL.
Well I have surgically removed the right taillight "bulkhead". Going to bring it to a metal fabricator to see if they can replace the rusty parts.
cheers

Interesting shots. The bar that runs along the side, how was it attached at the forward end of same?

It is just mig welded to the inner wheel well, not spot welded, so it was easier to grind the welds off.navguy12 wrote:Interesting shots. The bar that runs along the side, how was it attached at the forward end of same?

And I just looked at the left side and that bar IS spot welded to the inner fender
I'm now in the process of removing all the seam sealer from the trunk and one thing I have noticed is that some panels were mig welded in in some spots. Lots of crocked parts, parts hand grinded to fit and hammered down.
On a more positive note all 4 of the trunk to frame body mount bolts came out easy
cheers

Nothing like undoing a hatchet job.....I'm now in the process of removing all the seam sealer from the trunk and one thing I have noticed is that some panels were mig welded in in some spots. Lots of crocked parts, parts hand grinded to fit and hammered down.
When I R&R'd the rear bumper support on the '77, all the bolts busted....On a more positive note all 4 of the trunk to frame body mount bolts came out easy

Especially when the hatchet job is from the factory
And ya of the six bumper support to frame bolts, two broke during removal, two had to be cut off and two actually came out easy LOL.
cheers

Re: 1977 Towncar Resto mod!
Not the body damage, but the actual spot welding and assembly of the body structure. It's the little things such as the spare tire hold down attached to the shelf over the fuel tank installed crooked. The vertical panel along the R/R door jamb under the opera window installed too far forward and ground down so the plastic trim panel would fit. And a few other parts in the trunk installed poorly having to be 'massaged' with a hammer LOL. I guess I may be a little too OCDnavguy12 wrote:Really?!Especially when the hatchet job is from the factory

Sounds like not enough time spent ensuring separate parts were sized correctly......plus the old assembly on a Monday morning or Friday afternoon. It's the little things such as the spare tire hold down attached to the shelf over the fuel tank installed crooked. Goes to show how easily material wealth came to some folks, no concern over doing things correctly.....

I wouldn't be so quick to blame the actual workers. Management may have done a time in motion study and instructed the worker to spend 6 seconds installing a particular part rather than the 8 seconds it would take to do it correctly.
I know of a particular prefab home company located locally that instructs the workers to install the windows with half the required screws so as to speed up the install and shave a few cents off the material cost of each " quality" home. There are several other time and cost cutting procedures done as well.
Ford management most likely had done the same thing.
