The term "Rare"

This forum is for discussion of those terms we see in car ads and articles that can be misleading, misunderstood, or misused. The goal is to arrive at definitions we all can agree upon.

Have to agree with the rest of the group. Rare is over used and most don't even know they are showing how stupid they are. I watch the 66/67 Chargers and continually see in the descriptions how the car has the "rare" console in the front and back or has the "rare" automatic on the console. Just about every automatic in the Charger was in the console. A rare one would be the one on the tree (there were some but not sure if they came from the factory that way). And every 66/67 Charger had the console.

Oh yeah... Action... one of your descriptions of "rare" was a 40 year old car with low mileage? My 66 Charger hasn't yet made 80,000 original miles. But my 79 Continental Sedan as 108K and my daughter's 93 Buick she recently wrecked had 90K. So I guess my Charger is rare if I ever sell it!! :D

My Mark II convertible is clearly "rare" but is my 1955 Porsche "Continental" convertible?

The stock Mark II came in Sport Coupe form and there were just over 3,000 units produced in '56 and '57. So many survive that they are hardly rare. Pick up a Hemmings and there are usually six to ten for sale in various conditions.

The 1955 Porsche "Continental" Cabrio is far less available. There were 2,000 Speedsters (James Dean), 2,000 Coupes but only 200 Cabrios made for worldwide consumption in 1955.

Some, but not all, of the US spec Cabrios and Coupes were fender badged as "Continentals". It is estimated that 75 convertibles were made with the "Continental" tags before Ford filed suit to cease the use of the trademarked name.

Do I have the right to call the Porsche "rare"?

My newest car is 15 years old!
