Curiosity Question

Post by jon schapiro »

I have been curious for years. In the attached picture there is a little piece of black foam tubing on the air conditioning line just to the right of the low pressure charging port. Does that serve as a cushion so the line does not bang against the plastic housing below it or should that serve as an insulator under the heater hose just to the right of it? It has been where it is for 48 years but I’ve been curious.

It is an insulation wrap.

The picture isn't the best. In that area is the expansion valve. The expansion valve has a capillary tube and valve that is sensitive to temperature. So it is wrapped to keep engine bay heat away from the expansion valve.
The expansion valve adjusts flow of refrigerant into the evaporator. It does this by monitoring the temp of the exit tube of the evaporator.

And that warp also prevents hot engine bay heat from going into the evaporator case. Since the AC lines go in and out at that opening

Action - I was referring to that 3 inch foam tubing at the top of the picture not the sticky stuff you referenced. It is just to the right of the low pressure valve and between that and the heater hose inlet.

The picture is kind of dark

That is a cushion or protection so the ac line does not rattle against hose clamp or worse that the line gets banged up and cracks.

The low side of the system does not need any insulation. It has picked up heat from the evaporator sending to the compressor to later shed heat via the condenser.
If it sheds heat coming out of the evaporator that would be a good thing. However not much heat is given up here.

After blowing up the picture ....

There is a tower clamp on the heater hose at the heater core.
And a worm clamp on the heater hose end closest to the engine.

Tower clamps are the rage with restorers. It was what was used originally. Since you have a worm clamp on the other end of the hose, some questions come up?
Has the tower clamp never been removed in almost 50 years? How about that molded hose?
Or is the tower clamp a replacement?
