While refilling the transmission on my 56 Premiere, I followed the Lincoln Manual prescribed 10 qts. When I got to the tenth quart, I heard a bubbling sound and eventually fresh transmission fluid hitting the garage floor. I crawled underneath dreading what I would find and to my relief nothing major was leaking but there is a small valve with a loose metal cap on ton the top front of the transmission case, passenger side about the size/diameter of my minger where the excess fluid was coming out. I can reach up and easily move the cap but it is not screwed on. Its more like a metal cap that has been clamped on loosely. Is that supposed to be like that? Is it for overflow when dummies like me overfill? I looked at the parts diagram for this and cant see it, but the diagram doesnt show the passenger side of the case.
Doesn't seem right to me. Any ideas?

It's a vent. You may have overfilled.

Re: Overflow valve/cap on transmission case?
You can't dump 10 quarts into a transmission and expect it to take it down. 10 quarts includes the torque converter and there is oil in it that is either trapped or needs to be pumped into it. You are supposed to put in 4 or 5, start and run it, check and fill, shift between drive and reverse, and add until it is good. Recheck everything and drain out excess if necessary
