430 phenolic spacer

This area is for those who need help modernizing their Lincoln for purposes other than strict restoration. Such questions can be about adding an electric fuel pump, adding fuel injection, boosting horsepower or gas mileage, or tightening or lowering the suspension. Body customizing and chopping can also be here (although this practice is not encouraged by the LCOC).

430 phenolic spacer

Post by msloquet »

Hi guys
Had a smooth running 1406 edelbrock carb with exception of vapor lock issues so I called edelbrock tech support to find a spacer that would provide better insulation than the aluminum one I was running. Now she is running awful wont hold idle and has backfired via the carb. So has anyone had a y luck with this part number?
Thanks
Mark

Is the above condition happening when engine is hot?
Meaning it is not happening now no matter how hot the engine is because the ambient temps are so low.

Because your description above sounds more like a vacuum leak or mis-adjusted carburetor.

Phoenix - Yeah, it's hot, however it's a dry heat

I agree. I'm able to force her to stay on by feeding her a lot of pedal and she will almost get to operating temp but will flounder or backfire then die. I may just refit my old aluminum spacer with fresh gaskets.

I do not know if the 4BBL mounting holes for the MEL engine is the same as FE or 385 engines. I would suspect the answer is yes. But I do not know for sure.

Then there is the matter of the carb that you are using. Edlebrock 1406 appears to be a square bore arrangement. Or appears to be a Carter ABF that has been worked over.

Since you are designing your own system, the thoughts behind getting a spacer would be -
~Know how much space you have between the air cleaner top and the hood bottom. Get a spacer that is 1/4" less than that space.
~Get a spacer that has 4 holes versus an open dump. This makes the air/fuel mixture move faster to the intake manifold. It's the same concept for a high rise intake. The faster the air/fuel mixture moves the less opportunity it has to pick up heat. In addition the faster the air/fuel mixture moves the more complete the combustion. Which means more power possible and more MPG
~ And of course the plastic does not transmit as much heat.

Something like this one

However I bet you have a vacuum leak. That won't cause vapor lock. But it will cause running issues.
A vacuum gauge would be a good diagnostic tool. If you have one post the vacuum reading at idle on a warmed up engine.
If you don't have one, I would recommend one for this old technology.
If you can not get it to idle below 1000 RPMs when warm. Spray carb cleaner around the intake to head mounting areas and carb mounting. Get a RPM change?! That is the area of your leak.

Figured it out. I needed to add edelbrock part number 2732 which is a square additional filler plate. The phenolic spacer leaves about 16th of inch gap. Tore it all down and went to Hawaii race shop in Simi valley ca. Old hot rod Yoda named joe had exactly the part I needed. Added the 2732 filler spacer sandwiched 2 paper gaskets then the laminated spacer and final paper gasket as well as new mounting carb studs and nuts. Motor sounds back to normal. I will update to see how well this spacer is at deterring a heat soaked carb.
