66 convertible with tonneau cover

Any Lincoln fact related question can be posted here. Questions such as how many Contintenal convertibles were produced in MY1965? How much was the Town Car option in 1969? What size of tire was standard on a 1953 Premiere? or Does the Mark II retractible prototype still exist?

66 convertible with tonneau cover

Post by 66rag »

Picked up a 66 conv a few weeks ago triple black survivor with almost every option plus a tonneau cover. Any info about the tonneau covers? I have not seen this as a factory option? Looks like it was factory installed as it has the zipper along the dash pad where it meets the windshield. Any input would be appreciated

Sounds like a rather unique accessory. Can you post some pics of your car for us?

I am not aware of a tonneua cover being offered as an option by the manufacturer or dealer. I believe it was put on by a previous owner and is a custom installation.

This is an aftermarket add on. I have seen some good quality covers that are installed without damaging the car. There are others where everything was drilled including the erect panel with button snaps. Drilling is never a good option.

This has the pins with grooves in them. The cover has the round spring loaded clips that slide over the pins. Does not look like the cover was ever on as I had to do a bit of stretching to get it on across the back and up the sides. The front ended up being about 1/2 an inch short from being able to zip it up to the zipper that runs along where the dash pad meets the windshield. The cover also has stamping on the underside. I will try to upload pictures later

It's not factory. An aftermarket conversion, no doubt.

Here are some pics. A lot of work must of went into this. They would of had to remove the dash and maybe the windshield to put the zipper in?

It is a DSO 84 car with huge push pads on the front and rear bumpers. Also no emblems on the front fenders and no evidence of them ever being there.
All original paint and interior car. 53,000 miles Any thoughts?

The fastener style is used on our MGB roadster to attach the tonneau cover and secure the top.
Likely used on many other MGs and british roadsters.

It's known as a "Lift the dot" type of fastener.

Check the VIN. If the first digit is a 6, you have a 66 with a 67 grille, etc. If it's a 7, you have a 67 that's been customized, but not likely by the factory.

The interior is 66. The door panels, armrest trim, hood ornament, etc. The grille and headlamp doors are 67.

No sign of holes for the 66 fender stars? Check the welds at the inside of the fenders just inside the hood. Are they all blobby and uneven? Then the fenders have been replaced, likely from an accident, but it doesn't matter.

Why someone would spend the time, money and effort to put holes through everything for a tonneau cover is beyond me. Why not just put the top up? It would probably be faster than snapping all of those snaps.

I will check the welds later but have not noticed any evidence of accident damage as of yet.
Any other info on the tonneau cover or the big ass bumper guards front and rear would be appreciated
Also any additional info on this car would also be appreciated. I talked to who I believe was the 2nd owner and he does not remember much[ he is 79] just that he had a black Lincoln convertible once a long time ago. His name is on the Arizona Certificate of Title and is the guy who sold the car in 1989 to the guy I bought it from
