My 1984s and 1985s have a CONTINENTAL badge on the front and rear of the vehicles.
My 1986 does not have that badge.
My 1984s and 1985 follow the VIN designations of 1MR and my 1986 is 1LN. The mechanical and cosmetic changes between 1985 and 1986 are normally only known by collectors as they are minute. Besides, I'd be off topic if I went there
Tony,TonyC wrote:The answer to why, I think, is pretty simple from the source I read. Lincoln wanted the Marks in the '80s to take on the title of "luxury sports car." Although some sources had referred to them as such before, most didn't consider the older Marks to be "luxury-sports cars" like the European models. They were seen as "personal-luxury" cars. Lincoln wanted to get that image, so they started with the Mark VII. I think one of the things they needed to do was get rid of the Continental name from those cars, thinking it was too "Edsel-y," I guess.

You're mostly correct.
Older dealers have told me that the Continental badge was used on our Mark VIIs to meld with (at the time) Old School buyers, hence the dealer installed carriage tops also. Lincoln previewed their 1984 Lincoln Continental Mark VII LSC (Luxury Sport Coupe) and marketed to the 40+ male in America earning $75,000.00 + per year. The opening price tag was $23,706.00 .
Dropping the Continental badge for the 1986 model could have been due to a model sales decline (about 25%), a Board Meeting decision to lean away from a non buying group, or just simply a bean counter saying, 'look at how much money we'll save in materials and labor!'
My 1984 Lincoln Continental Mark VII Gianni Versace Turbo Diesel is STILL a Lincoln
EDIT. This is my 300th post! <OldSchool high fives himself ... and then takes a nap>

Hey guys!
I was on the Lincoln Canada website last night and I found this little blurb about the company in the 1950s.
Check it out.
Pretty interesting reading, the blurbs for each decade are pretty cool.
Best,
