Engine starts, runs great for a few seconds, sputters and dies. Will disconnect fuel line and crank to check pump, and put a timing light on coil lead to check spark. Any other ideas?

I have to assume that you are pumping the gas at least once or twice completely to the floor to set the choke to be closed, that you have verified that the choke is indeed closed before trying to start, that the carb screws for setting the fast idle are adjusted to 1500-1750 RPMs, that the fuel, filter is clear or new, that the fuel pump is in good condition, that there are no leaks in the fuel lines, and that the car runs fine after the second start.

Otherwise, I have no idea.
