‘72 differential leak
The pic is not great, but does this look like a differential leak or something else?? Maybe a pinion seal?

Re: ‘72 differential leak
The pinion seal is leaking, and the oil runs to the lowest point before dropping. The flange is likely grooved, and will need either to be machined, or a speedy sleeve installed, and the manual calls for the crush ring to be replaced every time the flange is removed, however I have been known to skip that part without consequences.
I have fabricated a jig to turn the flange in my drill press, then use a file on it while it turns slowly. Not the "correct" way to re machine it, but it works.

Re: ‘72 differential leak
umm, thank you Rick.
I don't know if I'm being resourceful, or just plain cheap, but I always try to work with what I have at hand.
As for that seal, it looks like a standard 9" rear, so getting the parts beforehand should be easy enough. The last one I did was a '75 Mercury. I had the seal for a 9", but found it was an 8.7 rear when I started, so I had to improvise.
