Good grief. The forum will not allow me to download a 10 second file of the noise - too big. The noise comes from the passenger side of the engine compartment and sounds like a cartoon sound effect..

Likely a relay.

And getting a little more detail would help.
Year and model?
How many miles?
How long have you owned it?
Has the sound been there since you bought it?
Does this occur with key on only? Or when the starter is cranked too?

Here’s a link to my dropbox of the noise. Please disregard the noise from the keys…
It sounds like an electrical/accessory issue.

And it’s a ‘72, 36k miles, new to me and the noise occurs when the ignition is turned on but before the starter is engaged

If it is a single sound when key is turned on it is a relay and relay is at least working enough to stay energized.

It is a relay being turned on to power up the windows or some other accessory. I know what you are posting about. That relay is not failing, it is just the way it sounds.
I have heard it on several Marks of the 1970s vintage.

Seems real loud for an electrical devise but ok. You’re right it doesn’t effect anything but I’m still curious what’s going on, which relay, etc. I’ll get some help and try and track it down.
Thanks for the help, Action

This website will not support big files. And a picture will work.

When you find te relay shoot a pic and post. If there are numbers on it post those as well.

I agree with Action; relays of the '70s, being much larger than relays of today, will likely make a louder noise when they energize. If it were a chatter instead of a boing, that might be cause for concern. It probably came off as weird because 21st-Century cars don't make that kind of noise.

That is not a relay. My 66 have a relay that makes a "boi-oing" sound like a cartoon and it does not sound like that.

That sounds like a vacuum valve or solenoid of some kind releasing. Something with a diaphragm, possibly aftermarket. It's not a chime. It's not a buzzer. It sounds like the car is tired and exhaling frustratingly!

My 1971 Mark III makes a similar noise from the SureTrack mechanical device on the passenger side by the firewall.

That could be it as that is where the noise is coming from. I’ll dig a little deeper today with a helper to track it down.
Thanks rfleming!

So the noise is coming from the passenger side of the firewall right behind the a/c housing and I’m thinking it is part of the air venting system. Sounds like a vent flap opening. In any case, it doesn’t effect anything so I will ignore it.
Thanks for all the ideas.
