Exhaust system 1977 Lincoln Continental

Post by hagbartd »

The rear muffler did collapse after a year in the garage.
And need a replacement.
Did think that perhaps it’s time to replace the whole exhaust system.
But were do I get a system!
Was thinking about a stainless steel system from Waldron.
But dos it change the sound?
Do like the sound it did have when I got the car.

Regards.

Shipping to Denmark may be rather spendy.

It may be possible to have a system made locally.

There should be very little sound difference between steel and stainless steel. The difference is the service life is much longer with stainless steel.
Especially in a humid climate where the vehicle is only driven short or shorter distances. In short distance operation the exhaust system does not fully heat up hot enough to evaporate all of the moisture.

Thanks for the answer.
It’s actually not that expensive to ship it.
My 1977 Lincoln has a single pipe system. Did the come with a twin pipe that year?

All US built 1977 Continental with either 400 or 460 had single exhaust system

Most US built 1977 Continental Mark series had signal exhaust. All Mark Series with 400 had single exhaust.
1977 Mark Series and 460 engine could be had with single or dual exhaust. Not sure the deciding factor.

Is it worth putting a dual exhaust on these cars? I was quoted about $900 to do it.

The worth or value of something is only a decision you can make. It is your values.

If you are looking for increased gas mileage the answer is no. It made no difference on mine. I did get ever so slightly better performance but not much.

My 77 got a 2.5” custom four muffler system with a crossover pipe for $600 back in 2006 or so. It was glorious. And I only had a lousy 400.
