How did you pick up a 61 convertible? They are very heavy. ;-)

It SHOULD be a 430, but it COULD be a 462.

Check intake manifold for a PN. If it says C6xx- it is probably a 462. Also, on the side of the block, upside down, passenger side should be a 460 or 430.

Timing covers can get cracked by improperly rebuilt water pumps using the wrong bolts. Otherwise, neglect, mechanic stupidity, etc. Post pictures of the crack.

Post some pics of that motor from different angles and maybe we can help.

Only if they have been replaced, and if they haven't you should do it...first order of business, before you even vacuum the interior...Wayne

The original timing gear on these cars was a metal sprocket with nylon covered teeth. They were intended to make the car quieter when running. In reality, with age the nylon teeth break and fall apart leaving several things to possibly happen. The teeth drop into the oil pan where they can block the oil sump and starve the engine for oil. The result isn't much different from running the car without oil. Overheat, blow a rod, seize the motor, crack the block, basically destroy the engine. That's why new owners of slabside Lincolns are advised to check, and replace if necessary, the timing gears and chain with all metal. That's why people are saying do it first thing. You can be fine one minute and have a ruined motor the next. It's literally about the most critical thing to do unless you know it's been previously replaced. You can read a lot about this subject if you do a search on the forum for timing gear.

From the looks of the pic, it appears that the nylon teeth are still there. Kinda hard to tell, but it looks that way to me. ???
I may be wrong.

Is the timing chain and gears the same for the 460 and 462?

Holy shit, Batman. I looked at your pic again and it doesn't look like it matters if it has been changed out or not, cause you only have half of a timing gear.

Try a forum search for 430 timing gear set. Talked about alot. You're gonna need it, either way.
