OFFICIAL 1965 to 1969 Wheel Specs

Post by Dan Szwarc »

I found an original 1966 or 1967 riveted convertible steel wheel in my attic. I'll be measuring it shortly.

Item: Wheel
Location: Four corners of the car
Notes: 64 to 69 are a hub-centric design, requiring a tight fit between the front hug and the wheel. Lugnut openings are concave/tapered.
Application: 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69
Original Ford PN: C4VY-1007-A (C4VY-1007-B is for L.P. Limousines)
Service Ford PN: C8VY-1007-A
Other Ford PNs: Unknown

Dimensions: (based on actual measurements of 1966 riveted wheel)
Offset (OS): 2.75" (positive)
Backspacing (BS): 4-5/16" (4.313)
Hub opening (HO): 2.86"
Overall Width (OW): 7.125"
Overall Diameter (OD): 16-5/16" (16.313)

Specs: (Note: Specs are not the same as dimensions)
Bolt Circle/Pattern (BC): 5 x 5 (5 x 127mm)
Size: 15" x 6.00"
Rim Diameter: 15"
Wheel Width (WW): 6.00"

Minimum Recommended Load Rating: 1900 lbs (1188kg)

You don't need to know the offset if you have the overall width and the backspacing. The Offset is the Backspacing minus half the Overall Width.

Research info:
The base Part number for any typical 60s or 70s Ford wheel is 1007.

Let's start with the MPC entries:

Wheel Info from 65/66 LM MPC
1965 to 1972 Lincoln (D) Wheel Info from MPC
1965 to 1972 Lincoln (D) Wheel Info from MPC
Note: All 1965 to 1969 wheels (rims) are considered equivalent by the MPC. There is not a convertible version or a sedan/coupe version listed in this MPC. I have heard that there were different rims offered for the convertibles. It may be incorrect.
The above MPC screenshot says the PN is C8VY-1007-A. This means a service part made in 1968 is specified as replacement for original wheels used from 1965 to 1969. The original part number is C4VY-1007-A per the 65/66 MPC. This also means the wheels are good from 1964 to 1969. 1963 was the last year for 14" rims until the 80s.

I've looked around for a 15" steel wheel to throw the spare tire for my '68 on and havent been able to find one. I've only made cursory looks around some local junk yards. Are there any other standard Fords or Lincolns that I can ask about at the junkyard that might yield the proper wheel?

I've found a lot of posts that say 1990 Chevy Astro, and etc. but I want to nail it down to hard specs and a real model number for a replacement model, possibly with a source.

Done. Specs are posted above.

Now that I have the specs, I can't find a replacement online. Everyone wants the damn application/vehicle and doesn't list anything before 1975 or 80.

A few footnotes: 1964 was the first rim to be 15 inch and it is 64 ONLY. 65-69 rims were different to accommodate the disc brake caliper.Sedan and convertible rims are the same. 1961-1967were painted grey, while 68-9 were black.also the lip where the perimeter clipping hubcap goes was slightly larger in 64-67. Many 68-9
Cars used the inside(normal) clipping hubcap to eliminate clicking complaints.Rims from certain Chevy/GMC pickups will fit the Lincolns but aren't perfect, hub is bigger and froget keeping perimeter clipping hubcaps on them.Where were all these people that needed rims 15 years ago when I sent them to the scrapper by the ton??? Oh that's right they were putting on 22's and now they want to return to stock...LOL!

Dan,

I have 2 of the grey riveted ones on my car and 1 on the spare in the trunk. The other 2 on the car are a black steel wheel (no rivets) so I am guessing they are of the 68/69 variety.

It's possible. Look for a date code stamped into them. There likely won't be a part number.

My originals have KH for Kelsey Hayes stamped on them.

Dan,
Thanks for the wheel/rim information.
I am looking to replacing the rims on my 64 due to being bent and I am using radial tires. Two questions come to mind. Do I have to change to radial specific rims or can I have my current rims straightened and still use radials?
Thanks,
Cliff

You can always use the original rims for radials. We have been putting radials on our 60s Lincolns since the early 70s. Having the old rims straightened will be your cheapest solution. However...

For maximum performance, safety, handling, etc. rims designed for radials will be better, flex less, etc.

Just as John mentioned above, you will want to make sure your wheel covers fit the new wheels before you buy. I believe it is important that you make sure the rims are tight on the hub and do not stress the studs excessively.

If you DO buy rims and get them off the shelf, please post a link or tell us where you got them.

It was about 75 degrees here today so I decided on one last 2014 ride with the top down. When I got back the top went up for the winter but I did get some pics of my unrestored OEM wheel that the spare is on. Pic #1 is the "Ford" stamp on the outside (hubcap side), Pic #2 is the "KH" stamp also on the outside, and Pic #3 is the inside of the wheel.

not lately Dan... lol Just the right size for a spare though. Have 4 1" whitewalls on the car. Of the "made in China" variety but they look correct. See pic They have been on there 3 seasons now without issue. Pretty good at holding tire pressure, no squeals around corners and at $100.00 each mounted and balanced I am happy.

I sent an email to Vintiques asking about replacement wheels. This was their reply.
Dan,
In response to your comment:
Looking for the specs for steel replacement wheels for 1965 to 1969 Lincoln Continentals. The cars can weigh up to 5500 lbs (convertible). Do you have a standard heavy duty wheel that matches the factory specs that can handle the load and fit the original wheel covers? I don't want any of that modern, oversized stuff. Just OEM replacement wheels to replace bent, cracked, and damaged factory original wheels.

Steel O.E. Style wheel used in the `60’s.

62-5605334 – 15x6, 5 on 5” lug pattern, with 3-3/4” backspace.
62-5705044 – 15x7, 5 on 5” lug pattern, with 4-1/4” backspace.

Based on my measurement, the second wheel is the best fit. It's backspacing is 4.25" and the factory backspacing is 4-5/16 (1/16th difference). This is acceptable.
