ENGINE NUMBER LOCATION MARK III 460CI
G'day again from Darwin, Australia. I have finally got my 1971 mark III coupe on the road but the powers that be have only given me 1 month on the road UNTIL I find where the engine number is. I have been all over the engine (460) but cannot locate it. Can someone help me with a location to find the engine number. Thanks. Peter.

Edit: The below information is obsolete. Click here for the latest: Location FOUND
No one has been able to identify an engine serial number on a Mark III in spite of posts that say it exists. many american cars before the 70s were not serialized to the VIN.

Re: ENGINE NUMBER LOCATION MARK III 460CI
OK, I found the mysterious engine number location on the 460 (and its little sister, the 429).
It is located at the rear of the block, driver's side, at the top of the deck just below the head. The number stamped will match the first two digits of the VIN (in your case, it will be 1Y) and the last 6-digits (8XXXXX).
These pics are from the original motor from my 1970 Mercury Marquis.
It is badly stamped, like each digit was done by hand. If yours are missing, simply add your own.

Just don't ask if there is a VIN on the frame. There isn't. If you need one, make your own.

Wixom had a better stamping ability than Kansas City, where my Merc's 429 was installed. Mine looks like it was done by hand. A guy with a bad hand.
