Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
Thanks for the responses guys. The new timing set will hopefully be in this weekend.
jsanford + kultulz:
I assumed that was how the gear was constructed, I just couldn't understand it once I saw it in person. I expected the nylon teeth, but not the complete coating...makes sence now.
Barry Wolk:
I agree it does look nice, and it is low mileage car....But I dont want to be around when this nylon decides to fail, which is probably more related to actual time then mileage.... Also there is about 1/2" slack in the chain (hard to notice in pic), and although that is fine by the manual, the nylon has got to go.

Well... I'm sure there's a potential hazard in your MEL design motor too.

Your 60 has the same design weakness, unless you have already replaced the timing chain.rld14 wrote:Good stuff. Thankfully my 60 isn't affected by this.. ya had me scared for a second!

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
They employed the nylon timing gear in '60? I thought '61 was the first year, from the articles I had read.

Yes, I'd like to know if my 60 has the nylon timebomb installed too.

Best Gaskets has that gasket in their set. I think Lincoln and/or Bakers Auto sell it separately.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
I have not been able to cross-reference any double-roller set that fits the 430s or 462s. I do not think any are available (or possibly ever have been).

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
Lincoln Land (727) 446-2193 sells timing cover gasket for 61-64 430 engine. Just bought one --$25 plus shipping. Parts for the replacement timing set are cheap enough BUT be ready for a LOT of labor. Still, I do feel relieved now that it is done! Look at the photo again if you are in any doubt.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
yeah, they refer to them in this post like they are readily available, and naturally when you look on ebay it shows everything "fits a lincoln" but im not putting faith in that. might just have to call Coyles directly.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
You all saved me years back. My oil pressure light came on and I figured it was this problem. So I pulled over and turned the car off and didn't muck around with trying to add more oil (no restarts until I had the pan off to see what was up). The built in oil screen caught most of it and my engine was ok in the end.
Years later (5? 6?) the car is almost restored. Time to redo the steering (again*) and then paint…
*I’ve done my research and am getting the metal spacers and a new center link in addition to the other parts.
